Newsletter: 2022 Broc Cellars 'Badger' Nero D'Avola

You'd be surprised how much work goes into even the easiest drinking wines. Top cuvées are usually the wines some winemakers spend the most time on, but for the best producers (and the ones we're proud to represent at Monarch), every wine is equally important. Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars is one such winemaker, and one we've championed since the day we opened.

Today's Nero d'Avola captures his passion and attention to detail perfectly. It exemplifies what Chris excels at, and why he's one of the most important domestic winemakers today. A wine that layers old world nuance and elegance over bright, brash California fruit: piecing together bits of Sicily with Mendocino to create a wholly new and individual wine. It's a true labor of love, and a perennial shop favorite.

Nero d'Avola from Broc's own Fox Hill vineyard in Mendocino, where the rare, native Italian vines dig deep into the exposed, rocky hillsides. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks before being split into both neutral french barrique and amphora to age for 10 months.

The winery's mascot wine for a reason, this is a wild expression of Nero d'Avola, full of sunny California fruit balanced by minty herbs and spice. Ripe plum, blackberry and cherry compote are accented with eucalyptus, white pepper and violet. The palate carries its bold flavors with firm, polished tannins and bright acidity. A wonderful Sunday wine, perfectly at home with grilled brats for lunch or a roast tenderloin on the dinner table.
Chris Brockway is making wine the way it has been made for centuries. No chemical additives, no pesticides, no industrial yeast, no herbicides, nothing but perfectly farmed and fermented grapes.

Though he's considered part of the 'New California' wine boom, Chris is actually part of a very long and noble winemaking tradition, and he certainly does not seek out the obscure for the sake of being obscure. As quoted in an Eric Asimov article in the NY Times: 'I'm not trying to out-weird anybody or obscure anybody,' he said. 'We're trying to get back to a more traditional conception of what wine used to be. Also, we like to drink wine.'
