Bejon 2-Pack

A pair of hands is all it takes.
Farming is a labor of love. Nobody takes that to heart more than Florent and Catherine Bejon. Today's wines are the product of that labor, a set of handmade wines crafted by a couple who decided to settle in a little hamlet just outside of Chinon and Bourgueil, an area not famous for wine where vineyards are planted sparingly between wheat fields and sunflowers prairies.

While these wines have plenty in common with the refined, storied Cabernet Francs of the aforementioned neighboring appellations, they retain an elegance, charm and an innate drinkability that puts them a cut above the rest.

Two wines made by the same hands yet are wildly different: one a juicy, fresh, crisp take on Cab Franc. A lighthearted wine whose bright, detailed fruit makes it an absolute joy to drink. The other delivers a bold, concentrated complexity I've only encountered in the very best bottles of Chinon. These are a fascinating juxtaposition and two must-try Cabernet Francs for any lover of refined red wine.

Catherine and Florent are farmers first. They found land in the town of Saint-Germain-Sur-Vienne, just 15 minutes from Chinon, and went to work converting the vineyards to organics and simply making the type of wine they like to drink.

Today, they farm five hectares, all by hand, with out machines or farm animals. They rarely trim the vegetation growing between the vines, as they feel each vineyard has become its own ecosystem. Everything is hand harvested with a minimal intervention approach in the cellar. Their wines are pure, beautifully honest expressions of Cabernet Franc.
'Pain Perdu' 2021 $38.99

From their largest vineyard, 'Pain Perdu': 100% Cabernet Franc planted on a mix of clay and sand. The grapes, from 40-year-old vines, undergo carbonic maceration and a long fermentation, creating silky smooth textures and buoyant flavors. Aged in a combination of tanks, old barrels, and clay amphora.

The effusive nose delivers a fresh bouquet of soft red and black fruit with earthy, herbal undertones and a delicate floral note. The palate bursts with juicy berry fruit, matched by rosemary and thyme accents. A firm mineral vein and soft tannins balance everything perfectly. Enjoy with a plate of charcuterie or any lighter fare.
'Les Bournais' 2020 $38.99

'Les Bournais' is an isolated parcel away from the rest of the vines, surrounded by forest and prairie. The soils are a mix of limestone and clay with the vines ranging from 40 to 70-years-old. After harvest, the grapes undergo whole-cluster carbonic maceration for three months before élevage in a 50/50 split of neutral oak and amphora for an entire year.

Heaps of red berries and woodsy notes bounce out of the glass, while the palate builds on this with even more concentrated, almost jammy fruit. Plenty of floral and earthy aromatics balanced by subtle minerality and a complex tannic structure that adds yet another layer to this already enticing wine. A perfect autumnal wine to pair with oven-roasted meats and hearty dishes.
