Cali Spotlight: 2024 Lady of The Sunshine 'Chevey'

Cali Spotlight: 2024 Lady of The Sunshine 'Chevey'

This repressive heat begs for refreshment, and as I've mentioned before, wine pairing is much more about situation, company and season than it is about matching specific foods with accompanying flavors. When the mercury spikes, nothing beats cold wines with loads of acidity and crisp, refreshing flavors, no matter what's on the table.

The trouble with many wines that maximize refreshment is their minimal depth of flavor, the former is always sacrificed for the sake of the latter. These watery, spiritless wines are not only flavorless, but lack all the glorious attributes that make wine so special: a sense of place, connection to people and moment in time.

Today's white has it all, and is my go-to summer wine. It's invigorating and jam-packed with vibrant citrus flavors and scintillating saline minerality. A playful blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay made by a young, second-generation vigneronne on the San Luis Ibispo Coast, who took inspiration from the Loire's Cheverny region, where this blend is traditionally found. It delivers what so many summer wines simply can (and do) not, complex flavors and refreshment. It will peak your interest and cool you to your core.

65% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Chardonnay, organically grown in the sandy soils of Rancho Arroyo Grande, on the southern coastal tip of San Luis Obispo. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented separately in neutral French oak barrels, where the wine ages for 8 months. It's then racked and blended before bottling. Unfined and unfiltered.

A beautifully harmonious wine showcasing the fresh, vibrant side of each variety. Opens with bright lime, lemon, white peach, lemongrass, fresh tarragon and honeysuckle. The simultaneously taut and generous palate balances concentrated citrus and crunchy orchard fruits with a bolt of palate cleansing acidity, and savory, saline minerality, a magical combination. This summer, have your cake and eat it too.
Gina Giugni was born and raised on a biodynamic farm in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California. Now, as a second-generation farmer on the Central Coast, she is making wine under her Lady of the Sunshine label, a domaine she established in 2017 after a degree in Wine and Viticulture, followed by extensive travel, studying with winemakers in France, New Zealand, Oregon, and Napa

Sourcing from extreme coastal vineyards, her wines are clear expressions of the Pacific. Hers are cool climate wines of precision, poise and elegance. They are testaments to her deep agricultural knowledge and cultural roots, and a bright, new direction for California wines.
