Alto Piemont continues to seriously impress. This rugged, high elevation cousin of Barolo and Barbaresco has been rediscovered of late, and is turning out some of the most dazzling and beautiful Nebbiolo in Italy. Its cooler climate, combined with bucolic vineyards and traditional, resolute winemaking can transform the usually rugged exterior of this legendary variety into a silken, perfumed delicacy.

Today’s wine from stalwart Bruno Giacometto builds on this intrinsic beauty with layers of ethereal, truffle-inflected aromatics and clean, precise red fruits. There’s a remarkable clarity in this wine, where each flavor and aroma is singular, lucid and acute, yet they all integrate and coalesce into one complete, seamless drinking experience. A hallmark of any truly great wine, which this one most certainly is.

Today, I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2015 Bruno Giacometto, Canavese Rosso in South Carolina.
100% Nebbiolo grown organically on a tiny 2.5ha plot on glacial, pebble-strewn soils. Grapes are hand harvested and fermented with ambient yeast in stainless steel tanks. Then racked into a single 2500L barrel where the wine rests for a year before being bottled and aged an additional 6 years before release.

Effusive and perfumed aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry and rose balanced by pipe tobacco, porcini mushroom and a touch of espresso. The palate sparkles with tart red cherry and eucalyptus, melded with fresh acidity and tannins softened by age; the wine seems to float effortlessly across your tongue and last forever. This is the epitome of fine Italian wine.
The Giacometto family have been farming this remote pocket of Piedmont for generations, but it wasn’t until 1962 that Bruno’s parents Giuseppe and Nella decided to bottle their own wine. Born in 1961, Bruno has grown up in the vines and has been fully in charge since 2001.

His wines stand out from most in the zone, being sourced from certified-organic estate vineyards and vinified using only wild yeast. Being much the traditionalist, Bruno only releases his wines when he thinks they are starting to drink best. And after a few years in his cellars, they emerge as some of Piedmont's best.
