Exclusive: 2016 I Custodi 'Aetneus' Etna Rosso

The wines of Sicily, especially the wines grown on the steep slopes of volcanic Mt. Etna, simply beguile me. There’s a simultaneous dichotomy in the best wines from this distinctive terroir: a weightlessness and richness at once. At their peak, they possess unmatched depth and structure, yet their buoyant flavors jump from the glass with exuberance. As if Barolo’s voluptuous, heady, earthy aromas are combined with Pinot Noir’s silken textures and detail.

No one is making more important or greater wines from this singular terroir than Salvo Foti, and today’s wine sourced from 150 year old vines, is his finest achievement yet. An all-time classic Etna Rosso just starting to reach its peak drinking window. This is a deeply concentrated red whose effusiveness fills the room upon opening, its dense concentration coats the palate with bold fruits and subtle tertiary notes. To describe a wine as soulful can be a bit dubious, but I can say unequivocally that this wine fills my soul with pure joy.

Today, I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2016 I Custodi 'Aetneus’ Etna Rosso in South Carolina.

Mostly Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante Bouschet. Sourced from biodynamically-grown, own-rooted bush vines on a cool, north-facing vineyard composed of volcanic sand and ash. The hand-harvested grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel before being racked into used French oak barrels for 24 months. It spends an additional 18 months aging in bottle before release.

An intense, almost brooding nose of ripe blackberry, black cherry, mulling spices, pipe tobacco and flint. The real genius of Foti can be found on the palate of this wine, where immense concentration and power is delivered in a silken, lifted manner. Lacey textures coupled with bold flavors combine to make this wine an absolute showstopper.
Salvo Foti is synonymous with the wines of Mount Etna. Born in Catania, he has dedicated his life to the vines, culture, and history of his home. No one is more responsible for putting Etna’s wines on the fine wine map.

He founded I Custodi in 2007, a project that captures the soul of Mount Etna: old vines, north-facing slopes, steep, terraced vineyards and extended élevage in the cellar before release. His wines are some of Italy’s finest.
