Exclusive: 2017 Castell'in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva

In the shop's seven year history, there have been a couple of instances where I've been in disbelief, times I couldn't have dreamt of when unlocking the doors on the first day.

On two separate occasions, I had the honor of welcoming the late Steven Spurrier, and Rajat Parr into the shop. These were, and are, two titans of the wine industry. Steven having been responsible for The Judgment of Paris tasting in 1976, an event that re-shaped the world of wine. Rajat having done virtually the same for a more contemporary generation through his many sommelier mentorships, and now as a producer of some of the finest and most forward-thinking wines in California.

In both instances, these icons pulled the same bottle of wine off of the shelf in admiration: Castell'in Villa, Chianti Classico Riserva. Made by Principessa Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessaby, a titan of Tuscany in her own right. Who, for over 50 years, has been crafting some of the most traditional and classically elegant wines anywhere in the world.

Her Chainti is comprised entirely of Sangiovese, vinified using indigenous yeast and aged extensively in large oak casks. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest wines made in Italy. This 2017 Riserva is other-worldly good, and just may be the crowning achievement of her storied carrier.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2017 Castell'in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva in South Carolina.

100% Sangiovese from the estate's top sites in the mountainous vineyards of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Composed of alluvial soils with limestone, clay, and sand. The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment in stainless steel, then racked into large Slavonian oak barrels where the wine ages for three years. Once bottled, it spends an additional two years in bottle in the winery's cellar before release.

Deep, powerful and super-expressive, it explodes from the glass with aromas of black cherry, currant, tobacco, sage, sandalwood, toasted hazlenut and five spice. The palate's tannins have softened with age yet it still posses oodles of freshness and verve, it's packed with lucid black fruits, dried herbs and suave leather notes. This is one of the world's most authentic wine experiences, now and for years to come. A true Italian classic.
Castell’in Villa is a monument to Chianti Classico. Proprietress Principessa Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa and her husband first bought the property in 1968. At that time, there was just a 13th century farmhouse and some outbuildings along with a single hectare of vineyards, but they quickly set out to expand their plantings and update the farmhouses.

Today, the estate encompasses 298 hectares, but only a modest 54 hectares dedicated to vine. Most of the vineyards are south facing with olive groves and forest interspersed throughout. The wines are soulful, distinctive, long-lived, and delicious. Proof that Sangiovese can rise to greatness when grown in the right place.
