Exclusive: 2017 Eric Texier 'Brezeme' Domaine de Pergaud

I've had the pleasure of tasting a lot of Éric Texier's wines over the years. He's an iconoclastic figure in wine, not for pursuing novelty or trend, but for making wines of tradition by using history as inspiration. His goal is to make wine the way it had been made in the centuries before the advent of synthetic chemicals and industrial machinery. Wines with big personalties, devoid of formula or recipe. Éric's wines are pure, honest, and some of the most beautiful expressions of the Rhône I've ever found.

Of the many dozens I've tasted, today's wine hit me the hardest, leaving an indelible imprint in my mind. It's a striking, old vine Syrah grown on a historic vineyard in the Northern Rhône, home to some of the oldest living Syrah vines on the planet. This is a classic and beautifully expressive wine, displaying textbook dark fruits that are perfectly balanced by the grape's famous savory, meaty and spicy edge. There's lovely refinement here found only in perfectly aged Syrah: a true iron fist in a velvet glove.

Today, I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2017 Éric Texier 'Brézème' Vieille Serine in South Carolina.

A rare, original clone of Northern Rhône Syrah locally known as Serine, planted in 1930! Organically grown on a mixture of limestone and clay. The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment spontaneously using full bunches in concrete tanks, then racked into large, used oak barrels to age for four years before being bottled without fining or filtering.

A bold and assertive wine boasting black currant, blackberry, dark chocolate, lavender, white pepper and a touch of savory cured meat. There's a creamy, mouth coating quality to the palate with flavors of grilled plum, Périgord truffle and mesquite, backed by graphite minerality and lively, brambly fruit. A deeply concentrated Syrah of historic proportions.
Éric made the leap from nuclear engineering to winemaking in the early 1990s. With no family background in wine, he began reading, studying, and visiting traditional winemakers and sustainable farms around the world. His winemaking is based on old-school techniques, inspired by an older generation of Rhône producers. Today he is undoubtedly, one of the most influencial figures in the industry. Producing a range of wines farmed organically or biodynamically from 30 plots in the Rhône and Macon.

As his longtime importer Louis/Dressner puts it: 'It is no exaggeration that Eric Texier is one of the most important people we have come to know in our 30+ years of wine importing.'
