Exclusive: 2018 De Fermo, Prologo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

If you're a long time subscriber, you've probably heard the word elegance used quite frequently in our newsletters. Although this fleeting quality is hard to describe, it's one I seek out in each wine I taste for the shop. A rare combination of grape, terroir and the deft touch of a skilled winemaker, which is precisely what today's wine brings to the table.

This is a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo that defies its broad shoulders and sheer mass; displaying the powerful, meaty, dark fruits associated with this rustic grape in a lifted, ethereal manner. Make no mistake: this is still a rich, concentrated wine though it drinks with ease and pure pleasure. No doubt a testament to winemaker Stefano Ceroni's abilities, and even more so a nod to his deep knowledge of this terroir.

And the timing of its arrival couldn't be more pertinent. This is a wine whose characteristics make it an impeccable and seamless match for the hearty roasts on your table this holiday season.

De Fermo is located a short distance from Valentini, an enigmatic producer of some of Italy's most highly sought after wines. The two share more than a close proximity, they both make deeply profound examples of Montepulciano.

Headed by Stefano along with his wife Eloisa de Fermo, the estate us is producing some of the purest and finest wines in Abruzzo. Their hands-off, minimalistic approach is changing the perception of this rustic corner of Italy. Modern technology is eschewed, there are no temperature controlled tanks, no fining, no filtration and only wild yeast is used for fermentation. As Stefano says, 'The goal is to have wines that have character, that are individual, that are genuine.'  These are some of Abruzzo's finest wines.
100% Montepulciano from two biodynamically farmed parcels, hand-harvested the latest of all of the De Fermo vines, ensuring maximum ripeness. The bunches are de-stemmed by hand and fermented in concrete. The wine is aged in large Stockinger oak barrels for 18 months then bottled without fining or filtration.

Deeply colored and opaque in the glass, the wine bursts with dark, brambly fruit, dried citrus, rose petal, and baking spices. Concentrated and palate-coating, with powerful berry fruit flavors balanced by elegant violet and lavender notes, finishing with a bolt of refreshing acidity. An impressive red wine that is never tiresome or overwhelming.
