Exclusive: 2019 Castel Noarna 'Mercuria'

Exclusive: 2019 Castel Noarna 'Mercuria'

I have recently become obsessed with mountain wine, more specifically, wines grown at high altitudes from vines clinging to snow-capped peaks. These wines display a unique typicity not found in any other red wines, portraying these rocky terroirs through an array of dark berry fruits, fragrant florals and transportive, pine forest earthiness.

Today's Bordeaux blend from the Dolomites of Italy captures this singular terroir through a familiar lens: Cabernet Sauvignon. Castel Noarna's version is certainly no modern Bordeaux or Napa Cab. This wine takes the grape in a different direction with an unmistakable coolness that runs through the palate, lifting the variety's inherent baritone depth. It's a woodsy, minty quality that places the wine directly where it's grown.

A masterclass in terroir clarity and a must for any lover of the world's most revered variety.

Today, I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2018 Castel Noarna 'Mercuria' Trentino Rosso in South Carolina.

A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and some Merlot grown organically at 320m above sea level on rocky quartz and slate soils. Crafted in an old-school style, the grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast. Aged in large, oak casks for 18 months, then bottled unfiltered and aged an additional 6 months before release.

Deeply aromatic with cassis, black plum, blackberry, graphite, eucalyptus and spice. The palate is velvety smooth, with concentrated fruit, pretty violet notes, forest floor and a touch of mellow tobacco. Finishes with round tannins and rocky minerals. This is a serious wine from lofty terroir.
Castel Noarna lies north of Verona in the narrowest portion of the Adige River Valley. Historically, this was the only North/South pass through the Alps and was host to countless battles, making Noarna one of a multitude of castles dotting the sides of the valley. It's surrounded by terraced rows of vines cascading downward from the castle, a breathtakingly beautiful place.

Marco Zani has been working these soils and crafting these wines since taking over from his father in 1989. Farming organically since 2007, his wines are as pure as freshly driven Alpine snow.
