Exclusive: 2019 Combel-La-Serre ‘Les Peyres Levades’ Cahors

Allow me to re-introduce Malbec, undoubtedly one of the most famous and popular red wines on the planet. Yet few realize that its origins are not South American but French, its literal roots tracing back to the small appellation of Cahors in the Southwest. Here, at Malbec’s genesis we find the grape’s true expression. A deeper, purer, more soulful version where this grape’s inherently deep, dark, brooding fruit is countered perfectly by savory herbal and earth tones. Argentina’s brash, soupy, overtly oaked versions seem like soft drinks comparatively.

Today’s wine from Cahors’ forward thinking Comel-La-Serre is PURE MALBEC magic. A deeply layered wine whose rustic, earthy edges have been polished by extended aging in oak casks. This is the estate’s top wine, and I believe one of the top Malbecs on the planet.

I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Combel-La-Serre ‘Les Peyres Levades’ Cahors in South Carolina.

100% Malbec from a tiny, half hectare site whose 50 year old vines yield a paltry 25 hectolitres per hectare, leading to immense concentration in the final wine. The biodynamically grown grapes are partially de-stemmed and ferment in large, old oak casks. The wine spends 16 months in the same casks before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

An opaque purple shimmers in the glass as the wine opens with deep, sappy aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, bay leaf and tilled earth. Its hefty magnitude is felt on the palate immediately where dark, brambly fruit and a hint of peppercorn spice are lifted to the fore by balanced acidity, refined tannins and a streak of unmistakable limestone minerality. Malbec at its most refined.

Julien Ilbert is a young winemaker, but the IIbert’s have been growing vines in the hamlet of Cahors since the turn of the 19th Century. For generations they sold their grapes to the local co-op, and it wasn’t until 1998 that Julien decided to bottle his own wine. The estate was certified organic in 2015, but chemicals haven't touched the vineyards since the death of Julien's grandfather from Parkinson's many years ago, whose death deeply affected his relationship with conventional farming methods. Convinced that the chemicals his grandfather had openly exposed himself to day in and day out were at the root of his illness, Julien hasn’t used them since.
