Exclusive: 2019 Guimaro Finca Meixeman

Spain is the most exciting place in the wine world right now. It seems everybody who is currently involved in the industry is in awe of what is happening on the Iberian peninsula these days. This country has a long and storied viticultural history, but what has transpired within the last five to ten years is nothing short of a full scale revolution. It's been amazing to watch from afar, but the proof lies in the bottles we are tasting and this is what is truly awe-inspiring.

Pedro Rodríguez of Guímaro is at the forefront of Spain's new wave. With every vintage, every sip, his wines made from the steep, terraced slopes of Ribeira Sacra are changing the way people view Spanish wine. These are not shy wines, but deep, soulful, and transportive wines that grab hold of you.

The first time I tasted today's wine was like experiencing a profound Côte-Rôtie: concentrated and opaque with that signature granitic spice that can only come from the uniquely situated vineyards found in both of these locales. A redefining moment in my wine life, it opened my eyes to the limitless potential of Ribeira Sacra and Spain as a whole.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Guímaro 'Finca Meixeman' Ribeira Sacra in South Carolina!

Although Ribeira Sacra's vineyards have been cultivated since Roman times, farming here is not for the faint of heart. It takes determination, sacrifice and humility, all of which Pedro Rodríguez has in spades.

His family had been making wine from this rugged landscape for generations, but it wasn't until 1991 when a young Pedro decided to start estate bottling. It took another ten years and the help of Raúl Pérez (a trailblazing winemaker from neighboring Bierzo), for Pedro to see the potential of his old vine holdings and to produce profoundly expressive, age-worthy single plot wines.

Traditional winemaking has also been reclaimed as well: wild yeast fermentations, foot treading, stem inclusion, working with low sulfur and aging in used barrels. These are deeply rooted Spanish wines.
A blend of mostly Mencia from a single, 1.2 hectare vineyard comprised of granite, sand and slate. These are Pedro's oldest vines. Hand harvested, fermented with native yeasts, 40% whole-cluster in large used oak barrels. Racked into used Burgundy barrels where it ages for 14 months prior to bottling, un-fined and unfiltered.

An effusive nose of ripe red cherry, blackberry, kirsch, dried thyme and white pepper. Medium-bodied but quite dense on the palate where the ripe fruit is exquisitely cut by a core of rocky minerals and focused acidity. One of my top Spanish wines.
