Exclusive: 2019 Joaquin, Fiano Di Avellino

In the world of fine wine there have been a handful of visionary vignerons who have not only made a name for themselves, but have elevated an entire appellation as a result of their audacity and courage. These mavericks' were so deeply in touch with their land, they were able to see potential in a certain terroir where others could not. Today's wine comes from one such visionary, Raffaele Pagano, who's truly gone against the current and established his wines as the new standard-bearer for white wine in Italy.

This Fiano is his masterpiece, a wine that goes beyond the typical regional style and elevates an already well-respected variety into a singular expression not found in this corner of Campania before. The wine manages to transmit this unique terroir, where ancient volcanic soils meet the Mediterranean, so vibrantly and clearly that the only comparable reference would be the way Grand Cru Chablis with age transmits its prehistoric seabeds. This is a modern Italian classic.

Today, I’m proud to offer some of the only of bottles of 2019 Joaquin, Fiano di Avellino Riserva in South Carolina.

Entirely Fiano of 20-30 year-old vines from just under a hectare comprised of volcanic limestone soil in the region of Avellino. The grapes are hand-harvested, rigorously sorted and fermented spontaneously. The wine ages for 8 months in neutral oak barrels before bottling and resting a few months longer before release.

Expressive and profuse, the nose is a dazzling display of white apricot, Meyer lemon, orange oil, white sage and raw almond. The palate layers crisp orchard fruit on top of marjoram, jasmine, and salted nuts. This is a serious, complex and deeply concentrated wine with both freshness and intensity in spades. Give this air if you want to drink it now, but time in the cellar will be well rewarded.
The Pagano family has roots in southern Italy going back generations. Today they are spread across three different wineries in the region, but from a young age, winemaker Raffaele Pagano wanted to strike out on his own. He split from the family to start his own winery in the early 2000s, wanting to focus on a more personal approach to winemaking.

Raffaele's human-scaled winery has helped make the wines as great as they are. Every cuvée and vintage relies heavily on his commitment to his land and his practices, and his involvement and level of care can't be overstated.
