Exclusive: 2020 Azienda Crus 'Mumbel' Bramaterra

Exclusive: 2020 Azienda Crus 'Mumbel' Bramaterra

I want to drink as much Nebbiolo as possible. There is something about the grape’s combination of soaring floral aromas, pure red berry fruit and earthy, mushroom base notes that I find fascinating, singular and completely irresistible. But it’s Nebbiolo’s magnitude and hard, tannic edge that prevent me from reaching for it as much as I’d like, for it can take ages to soften these wonderful wines.

Enter today's wine. It's simply one of the most elegant and refined Nebbioli I have ever encountered. Sourced from a small parcel of vines in the appellation of Bramaterra at the foot of the Italian Alps, and crafted by two young, intrepid winemakers with deep, firm roots in Alto-Piemonte. Here, a cool climate melds with the delicate hands of expert winemaking to create an extraordinarily seamless, polished Piedmontese red.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Azienda Crus ‘Mumbèl’ Bramaterra in South Carolina. This wine has never been imported before and I feel lucky to have sourced some of the first bottles available to offer you today.

77% Nebbiolo with the rest composed of a combination of Vespolina and Croatina, as is the tradition in Bramaterra. The hand-harvested grapes macerate for 28 days and ferment with indigenous yeast in stainless steel before being racked into used French barriques for 18 months aging before bottling.

A magnificent and intricate nose of red cherry, plum, dried lavender, rose petal, porcini and baking spices. The poise of the palate really struck me here, as did the aforementioned seamlessness. The silkiness of the wine, combined with the voluminous density of flavor, is astounding; juxtaposing dark berry fruit and gentle tannins. This wine will stop you in your tracks.
Davide and Daniella Bellini are Azienda Crus. In 2010 they left their jobs at an established winery in Alto-Piemonte to pursue their dream and settled in a small village in the heart of Bramaterra, a tiny area renowned for growing the appellation’s finest grapes. They dedicated the next 6 years of their lives to replanting long-abandoned vineyards and formally established Azienda Crus in 2016. With 3.5 hectares under vine, these are some of the smallest and finest wines to come out of Piedmont as of late.
