Exclusive: 2020 Damien Coquelet, Chenas

I'll keep this brief and say that your search for the perfect Thanksgiving wine ends here. Each Fall, I begin to taste dozens of wines with one thought in mind: Thanksgiving Dinner. I had a eureka moment last week when I tasted today's wine: a brilliant, shimmering Beaujolais from the smallest Northern Cru of Chénas. This wine overwhelmingly proved a perfect match for a day filled with eating and drinking; offering the perfect ratios of crisp fruits, bright acidity and mellow background spice.

There is a rare elegance to this Gamay due to its proximity to Burgundy. One of those special wines that manages to deliver sheer drinkability that defies its complexity and immense flavor profile. Buoyant and lively enough to drink over the course of several hours, yet sturdy and substantial enough to stand up to Thanksgiving's varied flavors and textures that are traditionally on our tables.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Damien Coquelt, Chénas in South Carolina!

Although he had been working at the very famous winery of his stepfather, Georges Descombes since the age of ten, Damien Coquelet bottled his first vintage at the ripe old age of 20. Learning alongside his stepfather in the vines and cellar influenced Damien's process with many of the same values: organic viticulture, hand harvesting, native yeasts and very little manipulation in the cellar. Damien currently works just nine hectares across several Beaujolais appellations. These are some of the purest, most transparent wines being made in the region today.
100% Gamay grown on pure Granite soils. The grapes are hand harvested, fermented with whole bunches and partial carbonic maceration (a classic winemaking technique in Beaujolais). Aged solely in concrete vats to preserve freshness and verve. Lightly filtered prior to bottling.

As vibrant as it is complex. The wine opens with aromas of red cherry, cranberry, kirsch, rosemary and a touch of pepper. The palate deftly balances crunchy red fruit, savory dried herbs and beautiful, elegant floral notes. A wine that pushes all the buttons.
