Exclusive: 2020 De Fermo, Prologo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

Exclusive: 2020 De Fermo, Prologo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

As much as I gravitate toward lighter bodied wines of finesse and elegance, sometimes only a rich, powerful wine will do. When I'm pulling a perfectly cooked rib-eye off the grill, a lighter Beaujolais simply doesn't cut it. There's something soul satisfying about drinking a heady, earthy red, especially when paired with an equally robust roast or grilled leg of lamb.

This Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Stefano Papetti and Eloisa De Fermo is just that. A wine whose broad shoulders and sheer mass display all the powerful and meaty qualities one associates with this grape, yet eschews its usual rough and rustic pitfalls. It delivers immense concentration effortlessly. A seamless, suave red that drinks with pleasure and ease. No doubt a testament to the these special winemakers' adroit skills, but even more so to their deep knowledge of this terroir. Easily the best Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I taste, year after year.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 De Fermo 'Prologo' Montepulciano d'Abruzzo in South Carolina!

100% Montepulciano from two biodynamically farmed parcels. These are the last of De Fermo's vines to be harvested, ensuring maximum ripeness. The bunches are de-stemmed by hand and fermented in concrete, then aged in large Stockinger oak barrels for 18 months. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Deeply colored and opaque in the glass, the wine bursts with sappy blackberry fruit, grilled plum, cocao nib, licorice, and baking spices. Concentrated and dense on the palate, the powerful berry fruit flavors are perfectly balanced by elegant violet and clove notes. An impressive red wine that is never tiresome or overwhelming.
De Fermo is located a short distance from Valentini, an enigmatic producer of some of Italy's most highly sought after wines. The two share more than a close proximity, they both make deeply profound examples of Montepulciano.

Headed by Stefano along with his wife Eloisa de Fermo, thier hands-off, minimalistic approach is changing the perception of this rustic corner of Italy. Modern technology is eschewed, there are no temperature controlled tanks, no fining, no filtration and only wild yeast is used for fermentation. As Stefano says, 'The goal is to have wines that have character, that are individual, that are genuine.'  Without a doubt one of the finest estates in central Italy.
