There’s something very exciting happening in Saumur. A new generation of vignerons are restoring, reinvigorating and recapturing the magic of old vine Chenin Blanc in this pocket of the Central Loire. The white wines produced by these intrepid and hard working folks are, in my mind, without a doubt some of the most compelling white wines in France at the moment. Bracingly dry yet textured, flavor-packed yet refreshing. They make magnificent foils to the bounty of fresh seafood and vegetables of the season. 

The newest entry into this pack of venerable young estates is Domaine des Sables Verts. Led by Caroline Meurée and her husband, Hervé Maligne, they have rehabilitated 16 hectares of vines averaging 40 years. Today’s wine from the miniscule parcel (less than .5 hectare) ‘Les Rouères’ is the crown jewel of the estate, and one of the reasons I’ve fallen so hard for these new generation Chenins. A brilliant tightrope of a white, balancing the grape’s inherent high acidity with juicy, just-picked fruit and textural, chalky minerals. Fresh and inviting yet deceptive in its seriousness.

100% Chenin Blanc grown on the classic Loire limestone soil of tuffeaux. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented with ambient yeast in giant 12 hectoliter oak barrels. The wine is then racked into a combination of large, used oak for one year before being bottled with a light filtration.   

A pristine, crystalline wine with aromas of lemon, key lime, grapefruit zest and Anjou pear. The palate displays the uncommon ability to be incredibly refreshing without lacking concentration. A saline mineral midpalate is deftly offset by crunchy orchard fruits and zippy acidity. I’ll be reaching for this wine all summer long.
Domaine des Sables Verts is a relatively new project, having been established in 2019 by the young Caroline and Hervé. She cut her teeth at the venerable Château Lamothe in Bordeaux and he in St Emilion. They’ve taken on the daunting task of rehabilitating a sprawling estate covering 33 different plots across five villages where everything is done by hand. Domaine des Sables Verts is now a thrilling new player in the ever growing field of very talented producers in Saumur-Champigny.
