Exclusive: 2020 Eric Texier, Chateauneuf Du Pape

Grenache when done right sits right up there with the great reds of the world. At its apex, it captures the elegance and fragrance of Burgundian Pinot combined with a commanding power derived from southern France's Mediterranean sunshine. Its problem however, is very few winemakers possess the skill and knowledge to harness the perfect balance of this fickle and finicky grape.

Leave it to Éric Texier to craft one of the most spellbinding Grenaches I have tasted in years. A Châteauneuf du Pape reminiscent of some of the great bottles of Château Rayas I’ve been lucky enough to drink. There is a purity and freshness captured in this wine that I find astonishing, especially considering this terroir’s unrelenting heat. It's this combination of lift and classic Châteauneuf du Pape muscle that makes this wine truly special. A bold and weighty Châteuneuf lacking its usual pitfalls of overripe, raisinated fruit and oxidized, rustic notes. This is a masterclass in viticulture and winemaking, and a wine taking historic Châteauneuf du Pape to new heights.

Today, I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Éric Texier, Châteauneuf du Pape 'Vieille Vignes’ in South Carolina.

A rare, 100% Grenache Châteauneuf du Pape, organically grown on sand laden with large, round glacial stones (galets roulés). The 80+ year-old vines are hand harvested and the grapes fermented using whole bunches with native yeasts in concrete tanks. The wine is then racked into massive 600L oak barrels for 18 months aging before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 1900 bottles produced.

The exuberant nose gushes with aromas of plum, black cherry, crushed raspberry, creme de cassis, violet and dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is lush, supple and coats the mouth with the black and red fruits found on the nose, yet drives the wine deeper with concentrated mineral notes, exotic spice and a bolt of citrus freshness. This wine certainly has the capacity to age, but I recommend drinking it now, with abandon.
Éric made the leap from nuclear engineering to winemaking in the early 1990s. With no family background in wine, he began reading, studying, and visiting traditional winemakers and sustainable farms around the world. His winemaking is based on old-school techniques, inspired by an older generation of Rhône producers. Today he is undoubtedly, one of the most influencial figures in the industry. Producing a range of wines farmed organically or biodynamically from 30 plots in the Rhône and Macon.

As Louis/Dressner puts it: 'It is no exaggeration that Eric Texier is one of the most important people we have come to know in our 30+ years of wine importing.'
