Exclusive: 2020 Notes Bleues 'Nouvelle' Chardonnay

Exclusive: 2020 Notes Bleues 'Nouvelle' Chardonnay

Today's wine is a double edged sword and that's exactly what makes it so special and unique. A brand-new wine from the Jura, a region which rivals Burgundy for Chardonnay's top terroir, this is the first time this wine has ever been produced but even more thrilling, also the last. This bottle possesses everything I love in Chardonnay from this part of the world: beautiful aromatics and tension with velvety texture and a stern mineral backbone. As the saying goes, don't be sad it's over, be happy that it happened.

Domaine des Notes Bleues is a newer domaine in the Jura, which is pretty rare in and of itself. Founded by Cédric Motte in 2017, after spending years working under the tutelage of two of Jura's greatest living winemakers, Benedicte and Stéphane Tissot, the level of quality coming out of such a young domaine is astonishing .

This particular vineyard, 'Les Nouvelles', belonged to Tissot until 2019 when he decided to sell it off because he felt the vines were simply too old to yield adequate fruit. Enter Cédric, who took it over and made this delicious, one-of-a-kind wine. Unfortunately he too struggled with its' low yields and decided to rip out the vines and replant the vineyard. This wine will never be made again

The Jura is bursting with new talent at the moment and Cédric Motte is a fine example. He's a local boy who grew up around the vines, working them during his adolescent years. Although he left the Jura to study music, ultimately becoming a professional Jazz musician, he always aspired to make wine and made his return to the region in 2017.

He’s combined his passion for jazz with his love of wine, naming his domaine after the 'blue notes', notes that though unwritten, Jazz musicians know how to integrate into improvisations. This translates well in Cédric's approach; he confidently experiments, resulting in some of the Jura's newest and most bewitching wines.
100% Chardonnay from an 80 year-old vineyard farmed biodynamically on marl soils. The grapes were hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless steel, then racked into used 300L French oak barrels for aging.

A deep and dense nose of lemon, tart apple, apricot, fresh ginger and a touch of bees wax. The palate is crystal clear, flowing with bright citrus and crisp, white orchard fruit accented by salty minerals and a faint hint of vanilla bean on the long finish. A brilliant wine to be savored.
