Exclusive: 2021 Brovia Roero Arneis

Exclusive: 2021 Brovia Roero Arneis

This wine is dripping with irony and contradictions. It's all about flipping pre-conceived notions on their head, but isn't that what we LOVE about wine, and wines like this in particular? You may have heard of Brovia's renowned, long-lived Baroli as we've featured them in the shop since the day we opened. For over 150 years, this historic Piedmont estate has been producing wines that are spoken of in the same breath as the region's titans: Conterno, Mascarello and Giacosa.

However, it's Brovia's white wine that steals the show for me, and is perhaps my favorite Italian white wine
ever. Arneis grown in the region of Roero (just north of Barolo) can often be flabby and flavorless. It must be picked at just the right moment or its acidity and freshness drop off dramatically. As you would expect from this great estate, Brovia's is picked at just the right moment.

This shimmering wine combines energy coupled with concentration found only in the great white wines of the world. Its vibrant, elegant aromatics and luxurious texture (although it sees no oak) combine to form a seamless, almost effortless drinking experience. This is Italian white wine at its pinnacle.

Brovia is a family affair through and through, having been founded in 1863 in Castiglione Falletto, the heart of Barolo. The estate is now run by fourth generation Elena Brovia and her husband Alex Sanchez, who oversee some of the finest hillside vineyards in the appellation. Generation after generation, these stewards of Piedmont haven't changed much; the wines are crafted in a traditional style with long fermentations and extended aging before release. This is a family who's heritage is felt in every bottle; a window into Piedmont history.
Organically grown Arnies planted in 1980 on sandy soils just north of Barolo in the commune of Roero. Hand-harvested and fermented with native yeast in stainless steel. The wine rests for 6 months in stainless steel, then bottled for additional aging before release.

This is the sole white from the estate and it shows, opening with white stone fruit, green pear, yellow citrus, white flowers and a touch of raw almond. The palate's firmness and elegant texture keeps all the juicy fruit flavors in check while finishing with a clean, brisk snap. A sensational seafood pairing.
