Exclusive: 2021 Domaine Des Sables Verts 'Les Poyeux' Saumur-Champigny
The name Clos Rougeard is synonymous with Loire Valley greatness. Their wines were, without hyperbole, the best Cabernet Francs ever made, particularly from the small plot of Les Poyeux. A vineyard whose exceptional terroir produces Cabernet Franc of such dizzying complexity and concentration, it is hailed as Loire Valley's Grand Cru. The pinnacle expression of Cab Franc. 

Unfortunately Clos Rougeard was purchased by a multi-national corporation in 2017, and with it came a change in winemaking. Sadly, the wines haven't been the same since.

Fortunately, I recently discovered today's wine from the young Domaine des Sables Verts on a recent trip to the Loire Valley. It's the only other Cabernet Franc from the magical 'Les Poyeux' vineyard I've ever seen. This wine is classic Poyeux: deep, saturated and muscular, yet poised and beautifully aromatic. A stunning and regal red wine, it carries the majesty of this legendary vineyard in every sip. This is the new Clos Rougeard.

All Cabernet Franc from the famed 'Les Poyeux' vineyard of Clos Rougeard fame, planted in 1950. The soils here are deep blends of sand, limestone and tufa. Organically farmed and hand harvested, fermentation occurs in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then racked into a combination of sandstone amphora, stainless-steel, and used 225L barrels from Château Latour. Bottled and aged an additional 12 months before release.

Dark and opaque in the glass, the wine opens with blackberries, cassis and mulberries, complemented by earthy graphite and pretty violet notes. The palate is saturated in succulent black fruits with a touch of tobacco leaf and sweet spice. Velvety tannins and bright acidity carry the intense concentration effortlessly. A legend in a making.     
Domaine des Sables Verts is a relatively new project, having been established in 2019 by the young Caroline and Hervé. She cut her teeth at the venerable Château Lamothe in Bordeaux and he in St Emilion. They’ve taken on the daunting task of rehabilitating a sprawling estate covering 33 different plots across five villages where everything is done by hand. Domaine des Sables Verts is now a thrilling new player in the ever growing field of very talented producers in Saumur-Champigny.
