Exclusive: 2021 Domaine Génot-Boulanger 'En Lulunne' Beaune Blanc

Exclusive: 2021 Domaine Génot-Boulanger 'En Lulunne' Beaune Blanc

Burgundy is changing. And while quality across the region has never been higher, plots once exalted for their premium location (mainly for full sun exposition) are producing wines of increased corpulence and breadth. Now lacking the deep minerality and energy that made them so highly coveted.

Conversely, cooler-climate, high-altitude vineyards historically undesired due to their inability to fully ripen grapes, are now being re-discovered and sought after by Burgundy's top names. Today's wine, from Meursault based Domaine Génot-Boulanger, is from one of these newly re-born sites: Beaune 'En Lulunne'. A plot planted at one of the highest elevations in Beaune (just north of 1er Cru Le Clos des Mouches). This breezy location lends a bolt of freshness and lift to the classically concentrated Chardonnays of Beaune.

Today's wine is a truly refined, detailed and incredibly well made white Burgundy, and this 2021 is the finest En Lulunne released by the domaine to date.

Chardonnay from vines planted in 1986 on clay mixed with limestone. Farmed organically and hand-harvested, the grapes are de-stemmed, gently pressed, and fermented with native yeasts. Racked into oak barrels, 15% new, for one year, then transferred to stainless steel before bottling (à la Roulot).

Immensely expressive off the bat with lemon compote, jasmine flowers, raw hazelnuts and quinine on the nose. Surprisingly lithe on the palate: rich citrus and crisp apple notes balanced by cleansing acidity from the higher altitude. The wine's natural verve is matched perfectly by its weight. Incredible now with a thorough decant, but a few years in the cellar will reward the patient with a thought provoking experience.
Guillaume and Aude Lavollée are the fourth generation at Génot-Boulanger, a domaine started by two pharmacists who moved to burgundy in the 70's to realize their dream of making wine. Since 2008, they've worked tirelessly to improve the quality of their wines by transitioning to organic farming while experimenting with biodynamics. Their philosophy is “maximum work in the vineyards for minimum intervention in the winery.” The painstaking work has paid off, as the wines at this address have never been better.

Guillaume's meteoric rise, over the last several vintages specifically, is no coincidence, his name is now consistently mentioned in collector's circles. These are wines to snatch up, as the secret is out and the wines make their way to us in smaller and smaller quantities.
