Exclusive: 2021 Envínate 'Táganan Margalagua'

I had no intention of writing this email, but after sharing a bottle of this wine with my wife over dinner two nights ago, I felt compelled to share what a marvelous and breathtaking wine this is. For those of you who have been long-time subscribers, you've already heard my praises for the Spanish quartet Envínate, but I assure you this isn't just another Envínate offer. This is the BEST bottle of Envínate I have ever tasted.

Hailing from 'Margalagua', a singular terroir of the Canary Islands. It's a series of small, death-defyingly steep vineyards that sit 400 meters above sea level on red basalt soils. A soil type found no where else on the archipelago. The 150 to 300 year old, un-grafted vines grow wild and untrained, hugging volcanic rocks and facing north, directly out to the blustery Atlantic.

One could call it a grand cru of the Canaries, but that would almost be a disservice, as the idiosyncrasy of this parcel yields a wine with supreme elegance and crystalline fruit buttressed by immense concentration, yet it possesses a singular character that just can't be compared. This is the Grand Cru of the Canary Islands.

Today, I'm proud to the only bottles of 2021 Envínate 'Margalagua' Táganan Tinto in South Carolina.

A blend based on Listán Negro with a touch of Listán Blanco and Negramoll. The organically-grown grapes are hand harvested and ferment with whole bunches in open top barrels. The wine is then racked into neutral french oak for a full year before bottled unfined and unfiltered.

This is a strikingly aromatic wine: pure and ethereal with cranberries and cherries subtly accented by herbal, umami-driven aromas of bay leaf, sandalwood, five spice and forest floor. All floating under classic, flinty volcanic notes. The simultaneously high-toned but earthy palate unfurls with more pure red fruit, blood orange and currant, contrasted perfectly with cassia cinnamon, dried hibiscus, and rock salt. Wonderful freshness frames everything perfectly, but the serious concentration and depth stand out above all else. Give this a long decant before enjoying now, or cellar a few if you can stand it, and reap the rewards of patience.
Envínate is a quartet of Spanish friends and old schoolmates making world-changing, earth-shatteringly beautiful wines from forgotten, often abandoned vineyards throughout Spain. With the founding concept of celebrating coastal wines and indigenous varieties, Laura Ramos, Alfonso Torrente, José Martínez and Roberto Santana have advanced the formerly stagnant Spanish wine culture in ways never before seen. 'Their aim is to make profoundly pure and authentic wines that express the terruño of each parcel in a clear and concise manner.'
