Exclusive: 2021 Gérard Boulay ‘Monts Damnés’ Sancerre

Exclusive: 2021 Gérard Boulay ‘Monts Damnés’ Sancerre

There is a vineyard in Sancerre’s famed village of Chavignol whose steep pitch is so laborious and pain-staking to cultivate that it was nicknamed ‘Les Monts Damnés’ or ‘The Damned Mountains’ by the monks who farmed it centuries ago. This precipitous slope’s limestone-laden soils and southern exposure has been historically recognized for producing the greatest Sauvignon Blanc on the planet; if Burgundy has Montrachet, Sancerre has Les Monts Damnés.

Gerard Boulay’s 2021 is quintessential ‘Monts Damnés’, brandishing the razor-sharp seashell minerality coupled with bright, ripe citrus flavors for which these slopes are famous for. As you can imagine, not much wine is produced here, Bouley is one of only a handful of producers with vines on this illustrious plot.

In past vintages Monarch has only been able to secure a handful of bottles…until today. I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2021 Gérard Boulay ‘Monts Damnés’ Sancerre in South Carolina.

Sourced from a handful of rows grown without herbicides or pesticides on bright white, chalky limestone soils. Boulay’s vines sit directly adjacent to Edmond Vatan’s famed ‘Clos la Néore’ plot. The hand-harvested grapes are fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks then racked into a combination of mostly steel barrels and a small portion (10%) of large, used French oak barrels.

As good as Sauvignon Blanc gets. An explosive nose opens with vivid clarity, displaying ripe citrus, gooseberry, quince, flint and a touch of cooling green herbs. The mouth-watering palate is brimming with energy, deeply concentrated mid-palate minerality and crunchy citrus fruits. As joyous to drink as it is hard to find.
Gérard Boulay is one of the towering figures of Sancerre. The Boulays have been farming and vinifying Sauvignon Blanc in the tiny village of Chavignol since the 1300s. His wines are amongst the most respected and heralded in the region, famous for showcasing the preeminent terroir of Chavignol in its most pure form. Like all great vignerons, his focus is the vineyard, hand-harvesting and farming without herbicides or pesticides, still a rarity in the region. His wines are classic, reference point Sancerre.
