Exclusive: 2021 Peter Leipold Silvaner 1L

Exclusive: 2021 Peter Leipold Silvaner 1L

We all love liters. It's the bottle that always seems to have just one more pour, perfect for when 750ml just isn't quite enough. While liters are sometimes regarded as only simple table wines, today's bottle is most definitely NOT that. Coming from a producer, a region and a grape that are all thought of as 'up and coming', to say this wine impressed us would be an understatement. We bought every bottle in the state.

Peter Leipold has been on our shelf before, in the form of other Silvaner's, but never with a bottle that is simultaneously chug-able and complex. His talent for coaxing mineral finesse out of his fruit is on full display here, backed by delicate aromatics that this grape is known for.

If you love ChablisSancerre, or the razor-sharp Fianos of Avellino, this is the bottle for you. One liter of ultimate white wine refreshment.

Peter Leipold is a wine Wunderkind. While there is a history of winemaking in his family, Leipold cut his teeth at Weingut Keller, an incredible estate known for their Rieslings and revered by Jancis Robinson as the 'German Montrachets'. He spent two years there before taking over the family winery in Franconia. A region long misunderstood, it is finally having its moment due to winemakers such as Peter.

Growing Silvaner and Pinot Noir almost exclusively, he has continued to demonstrate again and again how to coax that elusive mineral vein from his wines. Still considered young for a winemaker of his talent, his star is on the rise.
100% Silvaner from multiple plots owned by Leipold. Hand harvested, the fruit is directly pressed into stainless steel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Lightly fined and filtered before bottling.

A bouquet of brisk stone fruit and white flowers accented by a touch of gunflint minerality. The palate follows suit with crisp green apple and Anjou pear cut with a pronounced, laser-focused minerality. This chalky minerality is pushed across the palate by incredible acidity that adds another equally linear layer of refreshment. The finish is lingering but soft as a cloud, leaving your mouth watering and wanting more. Chill this down, serve with fresh seafood.
