Exclusive: 2022 Domaine Bartschi 'Sous les Rochers' Chardonnay

They say Chardonnay is the tofu of wine. Neutral tasting in its elemental form, but exemplary in absorbing and reflecting terroir and élevage. This blank canvas characteristic is what makes it one of the most widely planted and beloved varieties on the planet. And why Chablis compared to Napa Valley Chard are such opposing wines.

Today's wine is perhaps the most astonishing and singular expression of Chardonnay I have ever tasted. Grown at high altitude on the rocky, Alpine vineyards of Bugey. A rugged, mountainous region nestled in between the Jura and Savoie. It's a wine that shares a deeply mineral profile, akin to great Chablis, yet boasts balancing, concentrated fruit with rich and creamy textures that remind me of top Meursault. This Burgundian connection is no coincidence of course, vigneron Clément Bärtschi is an immensely talented winemaker who spent years working and honing his skills at none other than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, an address synonymous with greatness.

Truly an exceptional wine showcasing how delicious and transcendent Chardonnay can be when it's grown in just the right place, by just the right person.

100% Chardonnay from 50 year old vines, planted in a walled 'Clos' vineyard at 400m elevation, comprised of limestone and clay. All farming is organic with some biodynamics applied. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeast in a combination of stainless steel and used oak. The wine is then aged in 1-3 year old barriques for 12 months before bottling, where it rests an additional year before release.

Like the world's best Chardonnays, this walks a thrilling tightrope between richness and tension. Opens with a bang - precise aromatics of lemon zest, green pear, apricot and crushed rocks. The palate delivers serious concentration, chiseled minerals, generous texture and brilliant, crisp acidity, all in perfect harmony. A scintillating and serious wine of exquisite balance, combining Alpine minerality with Burgundian sensibilities.
Clément Bartschi is a native son of Bugey, a rich wine-growing region in eastern France, equidistant between Lyon and Geneva, boasting beautiful landscapes of sheer limestone cliffs and Alpine peaks. Clément is a local boy who has reached some of the pinnacles of the wine world, spending time at the venerated Domaine Romanée-Conti, and becoming winemaker at Rhône's M. Chapoutier.

It is was Bugey’s most famed vineyard, Cru Manicle, that drew Clément back, convinced by the terroir of his under the radar home. He now farms 3 hectares focused on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which radiate traditional winemaking, alpine influence and a deep understanding of this unspoiled area.
