Exclusive: 2022 Domaine De La Pépière 'Briords' Muscadet

Exclusive: 2022 Domaine De La Pépière 'Briords' Muscadet

There are two wines that shaped my palate and opened my eyes to what real wine is; two wines with un-disputable honesty, integrity and a true sense of place. I had always loved how wine tasted and made me feel, but I didn't comprehend the magical ability of wine to transmit time, place and culture until my first encounter with these wines.

Today's wine, from Domaine de la Pépière, was one of those wines (the other being Jean Foillard's Morgon 'Côte du Py'). This wine is the domaine's flagship, sourced from the 'Clos des Briords', a single 4.4 hectare site, considered the region's best.

I've been buying and enjoying this wine for over 18 years and each and every bottle is exactly as it should be: a liquid portrayal of a landscape where land meets sea. Brisk, salty, mineral and incredibly delicious, I continue to wonder why the prices haven't risen!?!

Toady, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2022 Domaine de la Pépière 'Briords' Muscadet in South Carolina.

All old-vine Melon de Bourgogne from 50-70 years old. The grapes are farmed biodynamically and hand-harvested. After pressing, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on the lees in glass-lined, underground tanks for 7-8 months before bottling and release.

Crushed oyster shells and oceanic salinity paint a picture on the nose that the palate builds upon, with crisp lemony citrus, green apple, and more savory, salty minerality. Its immense drinkability is only surpassed by its depth and terroir transparency. Year after year, this seemingly humble wine continues to be one of my all-time favorite white wines
The illustrious Marc Olivier has come to be synonymous with Domaine de la Pépière. He first started the domaine with only seven hectares and a dream. Today the estate is in very capable hands with residing proprietors Rémi Branger, a local that Marc has known since he was a kid, and Gwénaëlle Croix.

Farming at the domaine is entirely organic with biodynamic practices, and while 50% of the estate’s vineyards fall within the cru limits, they only represent an average of 15% of Pépière's annual production. In some vintages they will produce less or no cru wines at all if the quality is not there. Aging on the lees is always longer than the mandated 17 months, lasting a minimum of two years, but Marc, Rémi and Gwén have not been afraid to push it to 36 or even 48 months.
