Exclusive: 2022 Domaine Matassa 'Brutal' Rouge

There are shop favorites, and then there's Domaine Matassa. Perennially on our shelves for a fleeting few days, we've only been able to feature these wines in our newsletter once. That was almost five years ago, back when we could get more than a mere handful of bottles per year.

Since then Matassa's notoriety has skyrocketed as more and more people have discovered just how uniquely special these wines are. Nowadays, our small allocations come and go almost immediately, but this year we got lucky, and managed to secure more than we've ever received before. To celebrate our windfall we wanted to share this exclusive with everyone.

Today's wine, 'Brutal' Rouge, is the most highly coveted bottling from the domaine, and hunted down with fervor by its adoring fans. And for good reason, it is easily one of the most spellbinding wines in France. Wildly aromatic with an electric palate that just pops on your tongue; teetering on the edge of complexity and refreshing drinkability. A wine with no reference point, a true blue original. Once you've had it, you'll get it, and you'll be craving more.

I'm happy to offer the only bottles of 2022 Domaine Matassa 'Brutal' Rouge in South Carolina.
Co-planted Syrah and Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains, from 30-year-old vines on marl soils at high elevation in the heart of Roussillon. Hand harvested and co-fermented for three days on the skins in neutral fiberglass. Bottled early for aging rather than a long élevage in tank, the wine spends a year in bottle in the cellar before release.

Uninhibited right from the start, the nose explodes from the glass with fresh red raspberries, Provençal herbs, white pepper, sous bois and wild flowers. The palate is a lush, bright, juicy array of more red berry fruit and blood orange backed by rosemary and violets. An eye-popping wine that's exciting to drink.
Tom Lubbe didn't plan on starting his domaine in France. Originally from New Zealand and having grown up in South Africa, he began his journey in wine at one of the only minimal intervention wineries in South Africa. He became curious about traditional Mediterranean varieties that eventually led him to the now legendary Domaine Gauby in Calce. There, he studied under Gérard Gauby and fell in love with his daughter Nathalie. He opted to stay in France, and made his first vintage of Domaine Matassa in his living room before Gérard gave him the old Gauby cellar.

Today, Tom farms 20 hectares, all certified organic, though he's much more strict than organic certification allows. His cellar is a testament to transmitting terroir above all else with nothing added and nothing taken away.
