Exclusive: 2022 Koehler Ruprecht Chardonnay

Exclusive: 2022 Koehler Ruprecht Chardonnay

German Chardonnay is having a moment. Lately I've been inundated with emails from importers, fellow retailers and journalists (NY Times' Eric Asimov amongst them, article here) extolling the virtues of this new crop of wines from the land of Riesling. They all draw the same conclusions: German Chardonnay is not only distinct, displaying its own set of unique flavors, but has emerged as one of the preeminent destinations for world-class Chardonnay.

Today's wine, from shop favorite Koehler-Ruprecht, is the epitome of this, and one of the best examples of this new German style I have tasted to date. It's impossible not to make Burgundian comparisons when dealing with Chardonnay, but this wine is no French facsimile (and eons away from California's oak bombs). Take the layers of complexity and high quality of Premier Cru Chablis, and inject a bolt of acidity, cut, and terroir transparency found only in the world's greatest German wines. Make no mistake, this wine has a clear and distinct personality all its own.

As the prices of Burgundy climb ever higher, discovering a wine like today's Chardonnay is not only eye-opening, but thrilling.

Today, I am proud to offer the ONLY bottles of 2023 Koehler-Ruprecht, Chardonnay in South Carolina!

100% Chardonnay from a 120 year-old, western-facing plot comprised of chalk and sandstone, adjacent to the prized Annaberg vineyard. Organically farmed and hand-harvested, then fermented with ambient yeast in stainless steel. The wine is aged, untouched, in large, neutral oak casks to showcase the grape's linear, chiseled side.

A vivid and finely etched wine displaying an array of yellow citrus, tart orchard fruit, reductive flinty smoke and crushed riverstone. The palate is nervy, full of precision and angular citrus fruit. It's deeply mineral, a touch saline and very crisp, with a dry, long finish. This is a brilliant, new turn for this ancient and ubiquitous grape.
Koehler-Ruprecht, an estate established in the 1700's, was brought to prominence by Bernd Phillip's fastidious and unrelenting work in the vineyards. Bernd took inspiration from his grandfather, with winemaking practices more akin to the 1900's than the 2000's. No irrigation or herbicides are ever used and long, spontaneous fermentations are done with extended lees contact in the cellar. Nothing is ever added nor subtracted from the wine.

Now in the hands of the hard-working and dedicated Dominik Sona, these are extremely old-school wines from an estate making only dry wines (before it was cool to do so).
