Exclusive: 2022 Koehler-Ruprecht Pinot Blanc Trocken

Exclusive: 2022 Koehler-Ruprecht Pinot Blanc Trocken

Pinot Blanc is boring. Every example we'd ever had, hadn't tasted like much at all. They were neutral, watery and generic, with no sense of personality or place...until we tasted this Pinot Blanc.

Today's wine is Pinot Blanc flipped on its head. A mold-breaking wine that's packed with flavor and bright, refreshing acidity. It has all the qualities we love in crisp, taut white wines. Leave it to Pfaltz favorites, Koehler-Ruprecht to rewrite the script of this usually bland grape: expertly crafted and supremely refined, boasting fresh cut citrus and a stern backbone of rocky minerals. A wine with the same energy, poise and class as any great German white.

It's safe to say, this is easily the best Pinot Blanc we have ever had, and one of the best summer values in the shop right now.

All Pinot Blanc from a selection of 40-50 year old vines planted on limestone soils. The grapes are hand-harvested at peak ripeness and ferment with ambient yeast in stainless steel. The wine then ages in oak casks of varying size, some of which do not go through malolactic conversion, thus retaining their inherent bright, critic acidity. Bottled after 8 months in barrel.

A concise yet vibrant nose opens with lemon sorbet, green apple, ginger and crushed rocks. Elegant and refreshing on the palate with zesty notes of citrus and crunchy green pear that are seamlessly linked to savory, salty minerals. There's a delicate, soft texture deftly balancing all the zippy acidity and chalky minerality. An ideal bottle to have in the fridge when all you crave is a delicious, cold glass of white.
Koehler-Ruprecht, an estate established in the 1700's, was brought to prominence by Bernd Phillip's fastidious and unrelenting work in the vineyards. Bernd took inspiration from his grandfather, with winemaking practices more akin to the 1900's than the 2000's. No irrigation or herbicides are ever used and long, spontaneous fermentations are done with extended lees contact in the cellar. Nothing is ever added nor subtracted from the wine.

Now in the hands of the hard-working and dedicated Dominik Sona, these are extremely old-school wines from an estate making only dry wines (before it was cool to do so).
