Exclusive: Nicolas Mariotti Bindi

Wines from Corsica have everything going for them. This French island, just north of Italy's Sardinia, manages to wrap my favorite aspects of terroir into one package and today's duo from Nicolas Mariotti Bindi are two of the greatest examples I have tasted to date. This isn't hyperbole; we've carried and loved Bindi's wines in the shop in the past but I was floored when tasting these two special cuvées for the first time a few weeks ago.

Both bottles encapsulate the incredible confluence of coastal salinity, Alpine elevation and sunny Mediterranean fruit, resulting in wines that are irresistible and fascinating at once. The white is all citrus and salty minerals, like a broad-shouldered Muscadet kissed by the sun, while the red is robust and powerful, dolling out intensity coupled with floral elegance. The red reminded me of a great Brunello di Montalcino with a French twist, perhaps a nod to this island's proximity to Italy.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Nicolas Mariotti Bindi 'Mursaglia' Blanc AND 2017 'Mursaglia' Rouge in South Carolina!

Nicolas Mariotti Bindi originally left Corsica to become an attorney in Paris, but felt drawn back to a life amongst the vines of his homeland. After stints working in Moulin-à-Vent and with Corsican legend Antoine Arena, he founded his own domaine in 2007 with a tiny seven hectares in Patrimonio. He has grown steadily since, acquiring land bit by bit, and the estate is now comprised of 15 hectares of largely old, head-trained vines all of which are farmed organically. Everything is hand harvested in small baskets and fermentations occur naturally. He's one of Coriscan's top winemakers today, whose wines perfectly harness the beauty of his island.
Mursiglia Blanc 2019 $49.99

100% Vermentino planted in 2009 on clay and limestone soils. Fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in stainless steel for a year to preserve the fruit's freshness. Then transferred to concrete for an additional year of aging before being bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

A fresh, clean and effusive nose of Meyer lemon, lime blossom, salt stone and fresh thyme. The citrus driven palate perfectly balances density with salty minerals, chalky texture, an herbal tinge and cleansing acidity. Fresh yet powerful, as distinct as it is delicious.
Mursiglia Rouge 2017 $49.99

100% Niellucciu, the Coriscan name for Sangiovese, planted to the same vineyard as the Blanc. Fermented with whole bunches in stainless steel, then transferred to concrete tanks for 30 month's aging before being bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

A seductive nose of cherry, blackberry, sandalwood, violets, rosemary and a touch of olive tapenade. The broad palate is filled with rich, ripe fruit, rocky mid-palate minerality, elegant violet floral notes, all buttressed by fine grained tannins and a jolt of acidity. A French wine with an Italian accent, completely enthralling.
