Holiday Countdown 2022 (DAY 2) - Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Rouge 2019

Holiday Countdown 2022 (DAY 2) - Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Rouge 2019

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 2:
It seems like this year I drank more red Burgundy than ever. I just fell in love with the 2019 vintage and the exquisite balance of perfectly ripe fruit, clear minerality and fresh acidity. I hadn't experienced such pleasure in young red Burgundy since drinking a plethora of 2010s upon their release years ago.

Of all the tasty '19s I drank this year, today's wine tops them all. A brilliant wine that over delivers for the price and one of the few bargains left in the region's skyrocketing market.

Sylvain Pataille has deftly balanced this vintage's bright, juicy red fruit with Pinot's trademark spice and beautiful elegance only found in Burgundy's most exalted wines.

Sylvain Pataille is perhaps one of the most important Burgundian figures you've never heard of. Though not from a winemaking family, his father was good friends with Jean Fournier, and young Pataille spent lengths of time amongst the vines. After attending winemaking school in Beaune, and a stint at Domaine George Roumier, Pataille started his own domaine in Marsannay. Starting with a single hectare in 1999, he has since built up the domaine to just over 15 hectares, and over that same amount of time, has cemented himself as one of the premier biodynamic farmers in Burgundy.

His wines are a testament to the incredible care taken by Pataille, with each wine aged until deemed ready; sometimes spending up to two years in barrel. These wines are a paragon of what top farming, under one of the most extraordinary oenological minds, can do.
100% Pinot Noir sourced from a high altitude vineyard in Marsannay on classic clay and limestone soils. Hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and 15% whole bunches. Aged for 12 months in barriques, 10% of which are new.

A rich, vibrant and soaring nose of cherry, strawberry and raspberry laced with baking spices and floral notes. The broad but juicy palate is packed with reds fruits, cut by dense, mid-palate minerality and soft, supple tannins. An absolute joy to drink.
