Holiday Countdown 2022 (DAY 3) - Guímaro Ribeira Sacra Blanco 2021

Holiday Countdown 2022 (DAY 3) - Guímaro Ribeira Sacra Blanco 2021

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 3:
Ribeira Sacra Blanco? Yes! It is a thing and was one of the most eye-opening bottles I drank this year. This mineral driven, bone-dry, thirst quenching Spanish white will have Muscadet lovers and Sancerre addicts alike scrambling for more.

A celebration of a wine's relationship with its' terroir, Guímaro has always put the correlation between land and vines at the forefront of their practices, building a reputation as one of the top red wine producers in Spain.

In this instance, they have turned their attention to the native white grape Godello; the result is one of the most beautiful, refined and transparent expressions of Spanish wine I have ever had. A truly delicious combination of land and sea.

Although Ribeira Sacra's vineyards have been cultivated since Roman times, farming here is not for the faint of heart. It takes determination, sacrifice and humility, all of which Guímaro's Pedro Rodríguez has in spades.

His family had been making wine from this rugged landscape for generations, but it wasn't until 1991 when a young Pedro decided to start estate bottling. It took another ten years and the help of Raúl Pérez (a trailblazing winemaker from neighboring Bierzo), for Pedro to see the potential of his old vine holdings and to produce profoundly expressive single plot wines.

Traditional winemaking has also been reclaimed: native yeast fermentations, foot treading, stem inclusion, working with low sulfur and aging in used barrels. These are the definition of deeply rooted Spanish wines.
100% Godello planted on steep, terraced vineyards composed of slate and granite. The hand harvested grapes are foot stomped, fermented with wild yeast and aged in stainless steel tanks for 6 months. Only 275 cases produced.

An emphatic nose of meyer lemon, white grapefruit and slight tropical notes accented with a kick of iodine. The palate's boisterous fruit is expertly balanced by soaring citrus notes, salty minerals and palate cleansing acidity. A white wine of immense concentration and cut.
