Holiday Countdown 2022 (DAY 7) - Belargus 'Ronceray' Anjou Blanc 2020

Holiday Countdown 2022 (DAY 7) - Belargus 'Ronceray' Anjou Blanc 2020

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 7:
We're living in the Golden Age of Chenin Blanc, bundles seem to be coming out of the Loire these days. I feel lucky to have tasted many extraordinary Chenins this year from some of the best estates in the Loire: Domaine Huet, Thibaud Boudignon and Romain Guiberteau among them. Needless to say I'm a bit of a Chenin Blanc obsessive and I believe no one is making finer examples than Domaine Belargus

What drives my great love of this grape and Domaine Belargus' wines? It's their wines ability to do that magical balancing act of producing concentrated, flavorful white wines while retaining striking acidity and freshness. Today's wine is one of the most perfectly balanced wines I have ever tasted. Combining taut fruit, deep mid-palate minerality and beautiful texture.

Domain Belargus is undoubtably one of the most exciting young projects in France. The speed at which they have garnered so much praise speaks to the remarkable quality of this wine.

"This is one of the most spectacular new entries in the history of The Wine Advocate. Domaine Belargus is the name that should soon populate the world’s finest wine lists, especially since the prices are—still?—affordable." — Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
Domaine Belargus is an ambitious project looking to radically change perceptions of Anjou. The estate belonged to Jo Pithon, a legend in the appellation, but has been reinvigorated by Ivan Massonat who also owns part of Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy. When Ivan purchased the estate, he set out to create the Grand Cru level wines found in Burgundy, but in the Anjou.

The property revolves around the famous hillside of Les Treilles, the Côte Rotie of the Loire, planted entirely to biodynamically farmed Chenin Blanc. Every bottle is a clear, precise display of terroir and the classic, layered depth that only the greatest Chenin Blancs can produce.
100% Chenin Blanc from a collection of parcels within the Grand Cru of Quarts-du-Chaume, and the most important wine of the estate. Fermented with indigenous yeast and aged for 12 months in 400L French oak barrles.

The filigree nose shows immense concentration, with aromas of green pear, white peach, subtle spice and a touch of honeysuckle. The tightly wound palate is pure energy and vibrant fruit, showcasing deep, stony minerals and classic Chenin acidity. White wine doesn't get much better than this.
