Holiday Countdown 2023 (DAY 1) - Robert Moncuit Millésime 2014 Grand Cru

STARTING TODAY, I will highlight one special wine each day for the next 10 days. These are the 10 wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 1:
We're starting this year's countdown with a serious and historic wine, and perhaps my personal favorite. I tasted a lot of wonderful Champagne this year, but today's wine tops them all.

This vintage champagne from traditionalist Robert Moncuit is the total package: balancing biscuit-y richness from extended lees aging, with sensational acidity and chalky minerals that can only be found in wines from Champagne's top terroirs. A Blanc de Blancs in the truest sense of the style and a modern Champagne classic.

Finding a Champagne close to a decade old is rare indeed, so treat yourself to one of the most outstanding wines I drank all year...you've earned it.

All Chardonnay from what is considered the greatest village for the grape in all of Champange: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Only the oldest vines from across Moncuit's holdings in the village are used. The vin clair is fermented then aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak. Once bottled, it spends a whopping 5 years on the lees before disgorgement and corking.

Opens with a broad and expressive nose of a vintage Champagne at its peak, marked by toasted bread, fresh pastry, lemon curd, chamomile and cut stone. The palate is a lush array of crisp citrus and pastry cream balanced by a tense mineral backbone and cleansing acidity. Long and concentrated this is a powerhouse Blanc de Blancs from a master of the style.
Robert Moncuit is a family-run estate with a history going back five generations. Originally only growers who opted to sell grapes to the large houses, it was Robert Moncuit in 1928 who began making wine at the estate. Now helmed by his grandson Pierre, the estate consists of 8 hectares of Chardonnay planted in or near the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Everything is farmed without chemical pesticides or herbicides, and all fruit is hand-harvested.

In the winery, Pierre prefers long aging. His commitment to making wine only when it is ready continues to separate Robert Moncuit from the pack.
