Newsletter: 2019 Domaine Du Collier Saumur Blanc

What drives me to love Chenin Blanc and Domaine du Collier's wines so much? For starters, it's their magical ability to balance towering, concentrated flavors while retaining striking acidity, laser focus and lace-y textures. These are some of the most intense and balanced wines on earth, and no one is making finer examples of Chenin Blanc than the Loire Valley's Domaine du Collier.

Collier is undoubtably one of the most exciting young domaines in the Loire. The speed at which it has garnered so much praise speaks to the remarkable quality of their wines.

While I love this wine in every vintage, this 2019 Saumur Blanc in particular is the most profound and memorable yet. The tensity of the 2019 makes it one of the greatest-ever releases from this domaine. A complete and transcendent white wine. Year after year Domaine du Collier stuns me with regal, world-class Chenin, this vintage tops them all.
Old vine Chenin Blanc sourced from what is considered the greatest plot for the grape in the world: the hill of Brézé. Organically farmed and hand-harvested, the grapes are rigorously sorted for quality, with only the best making into this wine. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for a minimum of two years in a mixture of barriques and large oak barrels, the wine is finally racked before bottling and release.

A refined and radiant nose of yellow citrus, crushed rocks, Anjou pear and green fig. The palate is chiseled and tightly wound with crystalline orchard fruit, spice cake, and deep, rocky minerality. The striking acidity and textures lift the abundance of flavor and leads to a long, concentrated finish that seems to last for hours.
In the Loire Valley, the surname Foucault is on par with Rousseau in Burgundy or Conterno in Piedmont. Antoine Foucault of Domaine du Collier cut his teeth at the famed Clos Rougeard working for his father and uncle, Charles and Nady Foucault.

He set out at the ripe old age of 26 to start Domaine du Collier with a smattering of hundred year old Chenin Blanc vines on limestone outcroppings in Saumur, and has quickly become the name in the Loire Valley. His wines now as sought-after as his mentors'.
