Newsletter: 2020 Danila Pisano Rossese di Dolceacqua

Tucked away below Piedmont lies the coastal region of Liguria. A place most often overshadowed by the famous Barolos to the north, the winemakers here painstakingly tend vines clinging to terraced cliffs, crafting wines with incomparable characteristics and a distinct salty minerality thanks to the omnipresent Mediterranean. And in our opinion, no one makes better wine from these challenging vineyards than Danila Pisano: the unofficial leader of the Ligurian pack.

Pisano's estate sits at the fringes of the region, the French border visible from her highest vines. It is here that one of Liguria's historic grapes, Rossese, flourishes from the sunlight and salt-brined air that come with this climate. Rossese is all Pisano grows and all she will ever grow. From these grapes, she makes a wine of remarkable beauty and elegance; a perfectly light, fresh, bright wine that's an ideal fit for these mild days and cooler nights of Autumn.

Danila Pisano is a one woman show, almost. Having moved home to Liguria in the early 90's with her longtime partner, Danila knew she wanted to restore her family's historic estate of vineyards and olive groves. She immediately committed to organic farming and has been certified since 1996. She exclusively grows Rossese, a grape indigenous to Liguria.

She and her partner do most of the work at the domaine by hand, as the vineyards are too steep for anything else. She makes only two wines and both are labors of love, as all grapes on the estate are farmed and vinified naturally, with minimal intervention.
Entirely Rossese di Dolceacqua from two parcels of Danila's: one planted in 1965, the other in 1990. Grapes are hand harvested, de-stemmed, and fermented for 10-15 days before being racked into tanks to age only a few months (this to preserve the wines delicacy and vibrant aromas).

The nose is bursting with tart cranberry, cherry, pomegranate and mild spice. There's a pretty dried rose petal and violet note here as well, imbuing the wine with elegance. The palate offers more bouncy red fruit notes accented with a touch of fresh herbs. Light, fresh, and incredibly drinkable, this is the perfect wine for grilled veggies and any lighter fare.
