Newsletter: 2020 Paterna Chianti

A few years ago, a great friend and one of the smartest people I know (who has also been in the wine business as long as I have), described a wine as charming. I thought the descriptor was perfect, as it managed to capture the wine fully in one word, without the usual overwrought, extravagant tasting notes.

What makes a wine charming? For me, is its ease. It's the way the wine conveys its' myriad flavors and characteristics in a manner that's neither forceful nor over-the-top. All the wine's tastes and textures fit together like a puzzle in perfect balance.

Today's wine is one of these charmers. A Chianti that punches way above its price point. Pretty and elegant, yet full of the pure fruit, spice and that classic earthiness typical of a Tuscan red. A jubilant wine to drink and being offered today for an incredible value.

Paterna is found at the headwaters of the Arno River Valley, tucked into a remote corner in eastern Tuscany, between Florence and Arezzo. The cooperative was started by a small group of friends in 1985, who bought the dilapidated property in order to preserve a portion of Tuscany's heritage. With 8 ha of vines and 5 ha of olives, the vineyards stand at over 300 meters above sea level on slopes overlooking the river.

Winemaking today is overseen by Gabriella Tani and Eliabetta Berbieri who prefer traditional methods: destemmed grapes and soft pressing followed by a short fermentation with the use of natural yeasts only. In fact, most of the winemaking is outdoors in cement vats without temperature control. Always certified organic and with minimal sulfur additions, not much has changed since its inception. They're classic, old-school Tuscany. Just the way we like it.
Almost entirely Sangiovese with a touch each Canaiolo and Colorino, the quintissental Chianti cépage. All grown at high, cool elevations, the grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented and aged in cement. Bottled without fining or filtering.

The nose is full and expressive with notes of red raspberry, rose petal and sandalwood. The palate bursts with ripe black cherry, pepper and sage with classic, soft tannins. Everything is perfectly integrated and exactly as it should be. The result is more than just your average red sauce wine.
