The village of Vosne-Romanée is home to the highest concentration of Grand Cru vineyards in all of Burgundy. And although it's quite small, only 27 total hectares under vine, the wines it produces are the most revered, collected and expensive in the world.
For centuries, this historic appellation has been home to Burgundy's deepest and most profound red wines. It's distinct terroir, and cache of utterly brilliant winemakers, combine to reveal what so many find to be the platonic ideal of Pinot Noir: seductive, silky wines with an elusive, spellbinding combination of soaring, multi-dimensional aromatics and dense concentration on the palate.
Today's bottle is quintessential Vosne-Romanée, although you'd never know it, it's labeled as a simple Coteaux Bourguignon. However, all the fruit for this wine is sourced from Vosne-Romanée. A decision made by its young, ambitious and uncompromising winemaker, who has chosen to bottle a few barrels of his village wine as Coteaux.
This wine is a true testament to the village's historic grandeur, where its legendary intensity and complexity are on full display. It's lush and suavely textured, with deep baritone fruits that meld into mellow earthy tones and exotic spice. It's a brilliant gem, hidden amongst Burgundy's greatest treasures. |

Pinot Noir from a tiny, 1/3 hectare plot of low-yielding, 50 year old vines. The soils here are a classic Burgundian combo of limestone and clay. The old vines struggle to ripen, resulting in intensely concentrated grapes. Harvested by hand and meticulously sorted before fermented in traditional open top casks. The wine is then transferred to barriques (50% new) where it ages for a year and a half before bottling and release.
Deep garnet, opaque in the glass, the nose is marked by intense black fruit and spice aromas. Opens with black currant, blackberry, lavender, frankincense and Chinese 5-spice. The palate's vibrant freshness and firm tannins give structure to this luscious, concentrated, velvety wine. Benoit says he makes this wine for his friends, and that's exactly with whom this wine is meant to be enjoyed with. |

Benoit Chevallier took over the family vineyards in 2018, being the third generation of his family to make wine. The family has a long history in Vosne-Romanée, with Benoit's grandfather even serving as the towns mayor.
Benoit started with micro-cuvées, training with his family's vines and honing his skill, the family briefly rented out their holdings until Benoit was ready to take over. Today, he makes wines from multiple sites within the Côte de Nuits, mostly Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. His farming is all certified organic, and only native yeasts are used in the cellar. The wines are quintessential Burgundy, and the estate is one to watch. |
