Newsletter: 2022 Colombera & Garella Melascone

The thing is, I want to drink Barolo a lot more often. But the wine's sheer magnitude and hard, tannic edge, prevent me from reaching for it as much as I’d like. Drunk young, it demands rich foods that stand up to it's hearty structure. Or I can wait ages for it to soften and blossom into its full potential. It's a bit of a frustrating conundrum, because I truly love Nebbiolo so much. I find its unique and beautiful combination of soaring, heady aromatics, delicious, almost sweet red berry fruit and earthy, mushroom base notes, simply irresistible.

Today's wine wholeheartedly solves this dilemma. It's one of the most delicious and refined Nebbiolo I have ever tasted from Colombera & Garella, a young duo with deep roots in Alto-Piemonte who have emerged as the region's premier domaine.

This wine's magnificence lies in its duality: it tastes like top notch Barolo, displaying deep, bold flavors, yet delivers them in a silky, ebullient, easy-drinking style. It's a seamless bottle of Piedmont red you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on, or decades waiting for. Tonight, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Primarily Nebbiolo blended with a touch of Vespolina and Croatina, as is the tradition in Alto Piemonte, organically grown at close to 2000ft in elevation. The grapes are hand-harvested, macerate for 20 days, and ferment separately with indigenous yeast in stainless steel and cement tanks. The wines are then blended and racked into used French barriques for 10 months before bottling and release.

An intricate nose of mountain strawberry, plum, tobacco, rose petal, porcini mushroom and baking spices. The palate's poise really struck me here, as did the aforementioned seamlessness: its silkiness combined with the voluminous density of flavor is really astounding. Juxtaposing dark berry fruit and earthy leather notes with gentle tannins and bright acidity. This is easily one of the best values in Italy.
In the Alpine region of Alto-Piemonte, Colombia & Garella farm 9.5 hectares across the villages of Lessona, Masserano and Roasio. Here, using only the native red grapes of Nebbiolo, Croatian and Vespolina, they explore the stunning terroir that sits hidden within the Italian Alps.

Their wines are wildly unique expressions of these one of a kind alpine soils at more than 350 meters above sea level. Terroir combined with minimal intervention in both the field and cellar yield unparalleled wines that have drawn world-wide attention to this mountainous pocket of Piedmont.
