Newsletter: 2022 Ferme de la Sansonniere Les Gelinettes

Eric Asimov of the New York Times recently wrote: 'Choosing what to drink should be the easiest part of your holiday planning.' In following Eric's credo, I present today's wine: the perfect wine for your Thanksgiving festivities

I spend all year scouring the globe and tasting dozens of wines with the explicit goal of finding you great wines for this food-centric holiday. Of all the reds I encountered on this wide-searching quest, this wine emerged victorious. It is without a doubt, my quintessential turkey day wine.

A Loire Valley red blend with just the right combination of freshness, drinkability and serious gravitas to satisfy a full day of feasting and drinking. A beguiling elixir crafted by a true genius, it's ability to pack a wallop of powerful, dark fruit and savory spice into an elegant, silky frame is almost incomprehensible. An immensely versatile wine that transitions from light hors d'oeuvres to bold roasts and root vegetables with ease.

As incredibly delicious and pleasurable as this wine is, I can't understate its rarity. Bottles from this famed domaine are scarce, and hunted down with fervor by devoted followers. Its arrival to Monarch couldn't me more timely.

Today, I'm thrilled to offer the only bottles of 2022 Ferme de la Sasonniere 'Les Gelinettes' in South Carolina!

'Les Gélinettes' (an old French term for grouse) is a blend based on Loire's native Grolleau, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamay. All biodynamically grown on the rocky, schist soils of Anjou. Grapes are hand harvested and hand de-stemmed before fermenting in large wooden vats. The wine is then racked into a combination of 400L barrels and smaller barriques to age before bottling without fining or filtering.

Pours a beautiful opaque purple in the glass, the nose is captivating and effusive. Opens with brambly blackberry, black currant, ripe plum, mellow spice and a touch of licorice. It's real beauty lies on the palate, where densely concentrated, almost sappy, dark berry fruits float over a core of supportive velvety tannins and bright, raspberry-tinged acidity. A magical wine worthy of it's unicorn label.
Mark Angeli studied chemistry before falling in love with wine and moving to Anjou in 1989, where he searched for affordable land in pursuit of his dream to become a vigneron. It was here in the schist soils of Bonnezeaux that he stumbled upon La Ferme de La Sansonnière, and the rest is history.

Along with a select few growers, Mark has subsequently turned this previously sweet wine dominated region into a dry wine paradise, producing fine, regal wines of drive and finesse, usually more associated with the great appellations of Burgundy.
