'Les Gélinettes' (an old French term for grouse) is a blend based on Loire's native Grolleau, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamay. All biodynamically grown on the rocky, schist soils of Anjou. Grapes are hand harvested and hand de-stemmed before fermenting in large wooden vats. The wine is then racked into a combination of 400L barrels and smaller barriques to age before bottling without fining or filtering.
Pours a beautiful opaque purple in the glass, the nose is captivating and effusive. Opens with brambly blackberry, black currant, ripe plum, mellow spice and a touch of licorice. It's real beauty lies on the palate, where densely concentrated, almost sappy, dark berry fruits float over a core of supportive velvety tannins and bright, raspberry-tinged acidity. A magical wine worthy of it's unicorn label.
