Newsletter: 2022 Jean-Philippe Fichet Bourgogne Aligoté

Burgundy insiders know the name Jean-Philippe Fichet. His pure, crystalline Meursault rank among the region's best white wines. Like the man who crafts them, his wines aren't showy or flashy, but wines of subtly, grace and above all, terroir. They are clear windows into Meursault, perhaps the greatest white wine real estate on the planet.

Today, I'm thrilled to offer Jean-Philippe's masterful touch through his (not so) humble Aligoté: Chardonnay's lighter, leaner cousin whose zippy, lemony acidity and saline mineral cut make it a personal favorite.

Like many of the world's great winemakers, Fichet puts as much time and effort into crafting this wine as he does his much costlier Meursaults. It's a
nother spectacular example of digging a bit deeper to find great value in Burgundy these days.

100% Aligoté from Fichet's own vines all within Meursault, planted in 1991, on limestone soils with a bit of clay. The grapes are hand-harvested then fermented and aged in a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel, so as not to impart any 'outside' flavor. Deceptively simple winemaking, yet the end result is anything but.

Energetic and full of verve, the nose dances with Meyer lemon, granny smith apple, jasmine flowers and a touch of iodine minerality. Bright and refreshing on the palate, the wine carry's significant mid-palate concentration, with bold citrus parried by limestone cut and refined texture. This isn't your typical Aligoté, it's flawless white Burgundy.
Jean-Philippe Fichet is a meticulous winemaker. He comes from a long line of Fichet growers, and his attention to detail, from vineyard to cellar, is what sets him apart.

Fichet got his start in 1981, inheriting a solid selection of vines leased across the southern half of the Côte de Beaune. Unfortunately, several of those leases ended and Fichet was forced to rebuild his domaine from scratch. After spending most of the 90's gathering land under vine, he had hit his stride and is now one of Burgundy's living legends.
