I love the classics and spare no words when waxing poetically about historic places and wines. Equally important to me however, are the wines that go against the current, those that push boundaries and challenge preconceived notions of what wines from certain regions should be. Enter Dr. Ulrich Stein, the oddball vigneron behind today's brisk and bristling Mosel rosé. 

In a place so well known for its riesling prowess, making pink wine would seem to be a slap in the face of the region's old-guard, for Stein however, it's common practice to go against established rules and traditions; to blaze his own trail in pursuit of creating something truly unique. Ulli's goal is to make world class, profound and provocative wine by coupling his deep heritage with innovation.  

While we'll always have a spot on our shelves for the salmon-colored cuvées from Provence, this rosé strikes a different chord. It offers the elegance and romance of Southern France's best, but there is an undeniable Germanic precision here that runs throughout. This is an electric rosé unlike any other.

Mostly Pinot Noir grown on Mosel's famously steep, slate soils, plus a touch of Cabernet and Merlot from some of the only plantings in the region. Everything is organically grown and hand harvested. A portion of the grapes are direct pressed, with the remaining undergoing a short maceration resulting in a beautifully vibrant pink color. Aged for a few months in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and acidity. 

A zippy rosé, and a completely new and unique expression of Mosel slate. Shimmering in the glass it bursts with tart raspberry, bing cherry, rhubarb, rose and a hint of pink peppercorn on the nose. The palate is bone dry and bristling with crisp red fruits and crackling acidity. Easily one of the most mineral-driven rosés I have ever tasted. Summer's ultimate thirst-quenching wine.  
Dr. Ulrich “Ulli” Stein is a true iconoclast. He has long been one of the most dynamic and respected winemakers in the Mosel and has spent his life fusing the ancient traditions of his homeland with his own rebellious intuitions. His tireless efforts to rejuvenate old, abandoned vineyards in the southern Mosel is a testament to his everlasting work ethic and pursuit of finding deeper meaning where others could not. Nothing Ulli does is easy or for immediate gratification, his goal is to create wines of pleasure and contemplation at any cost.
