Newsletter: Meyer-Fonné, Cremant d'Alsace

Every time I read or hear about a new Crémant, the story is much the same: it's always a comparison to Champagne. Today's Crémant d'Alsace is different. While it's made identically, in the méthode champenoise style, this bone-dry version is no Champagne imitation, it's a Crémant that stands on its own.

Instead of trying to force a square peg into a round hole, Félix Meyer has embraced his Alsatian terroir, a place where sunny skies and rocky, granitic soils stand in complete contrast to cloudy, limestone-laden Champagne. This means healthier grapes and consistent ripeness, so no need for chaptalization in lean years or high dosages to balance out aggressive acidities. It's this amalgamation of warmer, drier weather and igneous soils, along with the use of native Alsatian varieties that produces this completely unique, exciting and utterly delicious sparkling wine. One which bursts with fresh, crisp fruit that's accented by distinctive spice notes delivered on a bed of small, creamy bubbles.

This wine isn't just another substitute for a pricey bottle of Champagne, it is much, much more than that.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of Meyer-Fonné, Crémant d'Alsace Brut Extra in South Carolina!

60% Pinot Auxerrois, 20% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Blanc, 5% Pinot Noir grown organically on granite and alluvial soils. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The still wine is then bottled for secondary fermentation where it ages for 12 months on the lees before disgorgment with no dosage (added sugar).

An aromatic and seductive wine, it opens with a burst of fresh green apple, lemon curd, zesty lime, sweet spices and a touch of chamomile. The palate is bone-dry with more tart orchard and citrus fruits, fresh baked pastry and a pop of granitic spice. Finishes with a flourish that's simultaneously crisp and creamy. An incredibly satisfying bubbly, perfect for your holiday festivities.
Félix Meyer is the third generation to make wine at Meyer-Fonné, a domaine his grandfather established in the late 19th century. And while the estate has always been known for its prime vineyard holdings and superb quality, Félix is considered a rising star in Alsace, making a name for taking these already reputable wines to the next level.

While farming at the domaine takes precedent, Félix's skill in blending is what sets his wines apart. Applying this skill in mixing wine from various parcels into complex, balanced cuvées characterized by stunning aromatics and a signature backbone of minerality and nerve.
