Newsletter: Nanclares 4-Pack

I don't know how else to put this, but these are the best Albariños I've ever had. I've sat here for hours trying to manipulate that thought into something more poetic, but am cutting right to the heart of it and standing whole-heartedly behind my declaration.

What Alberto Nanclares and Silvia Prieto have done with these wines has brought Albariño and the white wines of Rías Baixas to heights not previously achieved in the region. The closest comparisons I can think of are what Vincent Dauvissat and François Raveneau have done in Chablis; winemakers that seem to have a deeper, more profound ability to lift their terroir above and beyond what has historically been thought possible. Each expresses singularity of site, displaying the deeply mineral, saline base notes of the Galician coast.

These are as moving and thought provoking as any white wines I have offered. I encourage you to move quickly as quantities are extremely limited

 Soverribas 2021 $59.99

100% Albariño from three west-facing parcels of sand, gravel and a touch of clay. Vines range in age from 35 to 100 years old. Grapes are gently pressed before fermenting with ambient yeast in a single 2200 liter French oak barrel, where it ages for 9 months before bottling.

Opens with ripe yellow apple, stone fruits, white pepper and lemon verbena. The palate is laser sharp and salty with perfectly balanced guava and green mango fruit. Tightly wound and full of energy, it's drinking great now, but will certainly reward a few years rest in your cellar.
Crisopa 2021 $64.99

100% Albariño from a single parcel of 59-year-old vines planted on decomposed granite soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and crushed by foot. Fermentation happens on the stems and skins for 21 days, then the wine is moved into used barrels to age for 11 months. It's then bottled and rests for another 9 months before release.

This is a rare bird. Salt-cured lemons, tangy pomelo and orange blossom mingle on the nose, while the palate is awash in more orange citrus and fresh flowers. A racy, linear undercurrent of acidity and fresh-cut, rocky salinity provide verve and support to the kalidaskopic flavor profile.
Dandelion 2021 $29.99

100% Albariño from a mix of sites comprised of granite and sand. The hand-harvested grapes are fermented in stainless steel then racked into used oak barrles of various sizes where it rests for 7 months before being bottled.

Elegant and poised on the nose with white peach, lemon, green melon and crushed stone. The palate exudes refreshment with crisp citrus fruits, bright acidity and a touch of iodine. A knock out wine for the price.
O Bocoi Vello 2021 $48.99

100% Albariño ranging in age from 25 to 95 years old, planted on decomposed granitic sand. Hand harvested, foot-trodden and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak. Aged for 9 months in large, old Chestnut barrels with weekly stirring of the lees.

A crisp and bright nose of Meyer lemon, lime, white flowers and sea salt. The palate is juicy and bright with refreshing citrus and freshly cut green herbs. There is a soft edge to this wine which balances the rocky minerality and cleansing acidity perfectly.
Alberto Nanclares and Silvia Prieto settled in the seaside town of Castrelo after he retired from his career as an economist in their native Basque country. They quickly became stars of Galicia, crafting the greatest Albariños on the planet.

Everything they do is hands off: organic agriculture, ambient yeast ferments, and no filtration. The results are crystal clear, chiseled wines that transmit their place through purity and precision.
