Newsletter: Scar of the Sea SLO Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a fickle grape. Its thin skin and light pigment make it extremely sensitive to climactic pressure and very difficult to cultivate. All great wine must first be grown, which for Pinot Noir, takes an immense amount of knowledge, time and hard, back-breaking work, and why great tasting, inexpensive Pinot Noir is a near impossibility. If you've ever had a sip of Meiomi Pinot Noir, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Today's wine defies all odds. An immaculately farmed Pinot Noir from California's Central Coast, whose pristine fruit translates to a wine of exquisite balance and perfumed elegance. It hits all of Pinot's high notes: bright California fruit tempered by cooling Pacific breezes, yielding a wine more akin to its European counterparts than its domestic homeland. A Pinot Noir this delicious, with this much depth, concentration and personality, for under thirty dollars, simply blows my mind.

100% Pinot Noir, biodynamically and organically farmed across three vineyard sites along the San Luis Obispo Coast. Hand-harvested, the grapes are partially de-stemmed (25% whole-cluster) and fermented with native yeast in small wooden boxes. The wine is then pressed using an old basket press into neutral, French oak barrels where it ages for 8 months. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

Ruby-toned, the nose is expansive, with ripe raspberry, plum and wild strawberry, accented by delicate rose petal notes, forest floor earthiness and ceylon cinnamon. The jubilant, concentrated palate is bursting with crunchy red fruit, classic Pinot spice and a vein saline minerality. A wine showcasing elegance, beauty, and all the reasons this variety so highly coveted by wine lovers across the globe.
In 2012, Mikey and Gina Guigni started Scar of the Sea. They settled in the Santa Maria valley and began focusing on producing classic examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their close proximity to the Pacific ocean is a boon, the climate is cooler, and some would say perfectly suited to the two famous Burgundian varieties. Scar of the Sea is really an homage to the ocean.

As with all great wineries, farming is the priority here, while winemaking takes a traditional, minimalist approach. This is a winery to watch, already making delicious, terroir-centric wines at unbeatable prices.
