Piedmont Spotlight: 2022 Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo

Piedmont Spotlight: 2022 Lalu Langhe Nebbiolo

In a region as steeped in tradition as Piedmont, it's virtually impossible to break the mold and create a wine that is truly original. One of wine's most incredible attributes can be its undiluted link to history and cultural heritage. But sometimes regional styles can become homogeneous and stagnant if winemakers aren't willing to take risks. Wine always needs visionaries and rebells to shine new light on deeply entrenched dogma.

Today's wine is from two young female outsiders who have taken Piedmont by storm, currently making some of its most sought-after wines. This Langhe Nebbiolo is unlike any other - ever made, a brilliant and utterly unique take on an ancient style. Leaning on Nebbiolo's gorgeous red fruits and earthy spice, it catapults these inherent flavors to unheard-of heights. A wine with unbridled aromatics, bursting from the glass with precision, purity and elegance. Its silken, Pinot-like textures are the polar opposite of the typical, rough and dusty Nebbiolo.

Lara Rochetti and Luisa Sala (La Lu) met as students in Torino. With no ties to Barolo or winemaking, they honed their craft by traveling and studying viticulture under the tutelage of two of Burgundy's best, Domnique Lafon and Cecile Tremblay, as well as the Obertos of La Morra's Trediberri.

What they've started in Barolo is nothing short of groundbreaking, flipping the script on over two centuries of winemaking, and ushering in a new era of jubilant yet refined wines that carry all the class and sophistication one expects from great Nebbiolo.

100% Nebbiolo from single parcels in La Morra and Monforte, both located within the Barolo zone, although the vines are technically too young to make a Barolo. The organically grown grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in concrete with 50% whole bunches. Aged in large, Austrian oak barrels for eight months before bottling and release.

A gorgeously aromatic and highly drinkable take on Nebbiolo. Waves of pristine aromatics waft from the glass with bright raspberry, bing cherry, delicate violet and slight fennel seed notes. The palate is as precise and elegant as it gets, delivering bright, almost juicy red fruit on a tightly-woven, textured plane, expertly balanced by earthy mushroom notes, plenty of minerality and a touch of tar. Piedmont's new, absolutely delicious frontier.
Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala met in 2010 while studying at Pollentia’s Gastronomic Science University. Neither’s family had any prior viticultural experience, but they found themselves drawn to both the vine and to making wine. A chance encounter led them to a job at Trediberri, followed by stints at Domaine Lafon and Cecil Tremblay for two years. Planting their first vines in La Morra in 2015, Lara and Luisa burst on to the scene with their domain in 2019.
