Burgundy has become very expensive. No other region has seen a meteoric rise in pricing quite like it. While quality and consistency have never been better, finding top notch, modestly priced wines has become one of my biggest challenges. A challenge I take on with zeal, for there is no greater pleasure in wine than an exceptional bottle of Burgundy.
Enter the soulfully elegant, throwback reds from Catherine & Claude Maréchal, whose seductive perfume, purity of fruit and gentle spice remind me of wines from Burgundy's bygone era, a time when one could experience some of the best this region had to offer, without breaking the bank.
Today's reds are everything one could ask for from the world's most revered wine locale. Truly extraordinary wines, whose rarity lies in their outsized value. |

Volnay 2021 $84.99
A powerful wine from a worthy appellation, this Volnay is a pure, terroir-driven expression of one of Burgundy's premier red wine villages. From a high elevation parcel facing Monthelie, the grapes are hand harvested and gently de-stemmed before fermentation. The wine is aged in barrique for 15 months before bottling.
Superbly high toned with beautiful aromas of cherry, raspberry and crushed strawberry, accented with an elegant floral lift and deep mineral depth. The palate is full-bodied, with a sappy core of pure, stunning red fruit, baking spices and ripe, seamless tannins. The very long, very elegant and vibrant finish lets you know this is world class Pinot Noir.

Savigny-lès-Beaune 2019 $59.99
A blend of three old-vine parcels in Savigny-lés-Beaune (some of which are Premier Cru), located just north of the city of Beaune. This wine is raised in similar fashion to the Volnay: the fruit is de-stemmed before fermentation, then aged for two winters in barrique before being bottled.
The generosity and ripeness of the vintage are on full display here, opening with ripe, dark cherry and raspberry fruit accompanied by subtle oak spice and earthy mushroom undetones. The brilliant, juicy palate is perfectly balanced by delicate violet notes, silky textures and bright acidity. A complete wine showcasing the depth and power of this great vintage.

Auxey-Duresses 2020 $54.99
A single vineyard wine, although not labeled as much, located opposite the famous 'Les Clous' site, with direct southern exposure and limestone soils. A prime location in this notoriously cooler climate appellation. Again, the fruit is hand harvested and fully de-stemmed before natural fermentation and aging in barriques.
Gorgeous, open-knit aromas of cherry, plum, strawberry and perfumed florals. Lucious, sappy red fruits abound on the concentrated palate, with very refined tannins and bright, cleansing acidity. The fullest expression in the range, this buoyant wine is an absolute joy to drink.

Bourgogne Rouge 'Gravel' 2021 $39.99
Sourced from parcels in Pommard and Chassagne-Montrachet, 'Gravel' punches far above its weight. Despite being from a vintage plagued by frost and hail, the fruit that made it to harvest was spectacular. The pristine grapes were hand harvested, de-stemmed and aged in barrique.
Expressive and lively, this is a classic Bourgogne Rouge meant for immediate pleasure. Opens with black cherry, violet and classic Pinot spice. The breadth and depth of flavor here is remarkable for a 'humble' Bourgogne, with bright acidity and surprising structure, this is world class Pinot Noir for a fraction of the price it should be.

Catherine and Claude Marechal have been stand outs in Burgundy thanks to the precise, elegant and finely scented wines they produce from their small holdings scattered over six Côte de Beaune communes. Claude began the domaine in 1981 and in the mid 1980’s he met Henri Jayer, the 'Godfather of Burgundy', who became a huge source of inspiration and learning. Since then Marechal has, year after year, honed his skills and today offers incredibly fine wines, among the greats in Burgundy. |
