Producer Profile: Clos Du Jaugueyron

Producer Profile: Clos Du Jaugueyron

If you look hard enough, tucked amongst the grandiose chateaux of Bordeaux, you'll find families holding firm to the traditions of this historic land. While they've witnessed their neighbor's vineyards get snatched up by multi-national and luxury brands, they've stood firm; knowing the wines they produce are some of the most extraordinary in all of Bordeaux.

Today's duo from Clos du Jaugueyron, a TINY estate that sits in the illustrious appellation of Margaux, encompasses what has always made Bordeaux so wonderful, and one of the world's most important wine regions. Here, in the gravel strewn soils of the left bank, Cabernet Sauvignon shines bright. And these two examples wines are absolute classics, dishing out deeply perfumed cassis fruit and the appellation's signature exotic, Asian spice. These are deeply complex, traditional Bordeaux, as it's always been and should always be.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of Clos du Jaugueyron 'Nout' Margaux & Haut-Médoc in South Carolina!

Haut-Médoc 2019 $59.99
*Haut-Médoc 2018 1.5L $139.99

60% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 7% Petit-Verdot, grown biodynamically on gravel soils. Hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast in concrete vats, then aged for one year in a combination of new and one year-old oak barrels. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

A classic nose of black currants, plum, graphite, violet, spice and a touch of truffle. The palate is rich but in perfect balance; dark, lush fruit is expertly balanced by polished tannins and cleansing acidity. A perfect, true-blue Bordeaux, just the way I love it.
Margaux 'Nout' 2018 $89.99

An equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the famous vineyard of Le Tertre within Margaux. Grown and fermented identically to the Haut-Médoc, then raised in oak barriques for 12 months, 50% of which are new. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered. 2018 is considered one of the top vintages of the decade.

Displays a deep, rich perfume of black cherry, mulberry, forest floor and peppery spice. The vintage's warmth comes through on the full-bodied palate where mouth coating, dark fruits are perfectly balanced by integrated oak and rounded tannins. Drinking beautifully now, but will age gracefully over the next 10 years if you can keep your hands off it.
Originally from the Languedoc, Michel Théron was destined to take over his family's domaine after completing his studies in Bordeaux, but alas, he fell in love with his wife Stéphanie, a Bordelaise, and never returned.

Michel quickly became fascinated by the history and beauty of the Médoc and bought his first parcel in Cantenac in 1993: 0.4ha of un-grafted vines that lend their name to the domaine. Clos du Jaugueyron is now composed of 16 parcels around Margaux and has been Demeter certified since 2008. Michel loves being among his vines, observing and connecting to nature. His winery is rudimentary, at least compared to the regional norm, and is conveniently placed next to their house in the middle of the Margaux.

Their's are Bordeaux made by hand in the pursuit of pleasure.
