Producer Profile: Elisabetta Foradori

I say this without exaggeration: Elisabetta Foradori is one of the most important figures in Italian wine history. After taking over her family's winery following the untimely death of her father, she has not only prevailed as one of the only female winemakers in the region, but also in her country. She has accomplished this while saving not one, but two historic, indigenous varieties from near extinction. Her work in biodynamics has helped establish a thriving ecosystem amongst her alpine vineyards and inspired countless others to take the road less traveled through winemaking with minimal intervention.

Today's offer is a first for Monarch as we've managed to secure a selection that spans her estate, including the highly coveted and ground-breaking Granato cuvée. This is a rare chance to jump head first into the wines of an icon.

Reigning from Trentino, way up in the Dolomite mountain range, Elisabetta is a firm believer in the energy which the mountains give her land. Conserving her heritage through vineyards fuels her passion, as she continues to dedicate herself to protecting her land through biodiversity. Her father's death in 1984 forced Elisabetta's hand in taking over the family winery at only 19 years old, but she has since become one of the most influential winemakers in the world.

Her winemaking philosophy is simple: trust and love the vines and make wines that are true reflections of indigenous grapes and their land.
'Fontanasanta' Nosiola 2021   $49.99

100% Nosiola. An ancient local variety, Nosiola has made a small comeback from near-extinction, thanks in large part to Foradori, who farms 2 hectares of it on clay-limestone soils. Whole berries ferment spontaneously and age in clay amphorae for 8 months, then in oak and acacia casks for 2 additional months before bottling.

This wine is ALIVE! Light in color but almost deceptive in its complexity. Aromas of lemon blossom, star fruit, fresh mountain herbs and crushed rocks. The palate is focused and precise, bursting with citrus and stony minerals. Chablis-like in many ways, this is a must for any lover of stunning white wine.
'Fuoripista' Pinot Grigio 2021 $49.99

This is no ordinary Pinot Grigio. Sourced from an old pergola-trained vineyard of sand and gravel soils worked bio-dynamically. The grapes spend 8 months on their skins in clay amphorae, a pre-industrial and ancient method of making white wine.

The color is striking, radiating from the glass with orange, pink and blush hues. The aromas are lush but nuanced, with tangerine, tea leaves, wild strawberries, and anise. The palate is crisp yet over-flowing with fresh blood orange, Meyer lemon and red berries. Finishes with soft tannins and powdery mineral notes. Singular and unforgettable.
'Sgarzon' Teroldego 2021 $53.99

100% Teroldego form the 'Sgarzon' Vineyard, which translates to 'Shoot' and refers to the how quickly the vines grow in this cooler, sandier site. The grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and spend 8 months in amphorae on the skins. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

Lighter than her other reds, Sgarzon is a lifted, delicate expression of Teroldego. High-toned red currants and cranberries are caressed by soft spice and earthy floral notes. The palate is equally light, but structured, with layers of red berries and rose accented with citrus peel and cassia cinnamon. All this flavor lifted by vibrant freshness and silky tannins that lead to a refreshing and elegant finish. Vibrant enough to sit and ponder, yet shockingly easy to drink, PINOT-ESQUE.
'Granato' Teroldego 2021 $89.99

This special cuvée comes from the estate's oldest Teroldego vines, more than 70 years old. The grapes are half de-stemmed and fermented with wild yeasts in large wooden vats known as tini. Then transferred to massive, old oak botti for 18 months. After bottling without filtration, it ages another year before release.

This is a reference point for the sheer potential of Teroldego, and the winemaking skill of Foradori. Intertwined notes of black cherry and red currant are seemingly pulled from a floor of crushed gravel. The structure steals the show on a palate layered with herbs, leather, iron, spice, all on top of more brambly black fruit. Refined tannins and a long finish tie everything together and leave you aching for the next sip. Elisabetta's masterpiece.
Teroldego 2021 $34.99

This may be the Foradori you know already if you've tasted her wines. It's a shelf staple, and for good reason. Foradori's estate, Teroldego, comes from sites she's worked with since the beginning. Made similarly to 'Granato', it sees only a few months in barrel and cement tank before release.

Aromatic up front, this is like an elegant blend of Cru Beaujolais and Northern Rhône Syrah. Black and red fruit hover over leathery-spicy undertones that continue on the palate. Spiced pomegranate and eucalyptus are matched with ferrous and floral notes that end in a sappy, bright finish. An "entry level" wine that is a truly unique experience.
