Producer Spotlight: Envínate

Producer Spotlight: Envínate

I firmly believe that decades from now we will look back at the last ten years in wine and credit four friends, who met in winemaking school, with single-handedly changing the trajectory of Spanish wine.

To our longtime supporters, today's offering will be familiar as we have featured the wines of Envínate with every new vintage's release. But our love and admiration for these wines only grows each year, as does the sheer joy and excitement upon receiving them in shop.

Today's release focuses on their rare, moonscape-like holdings in the Canary Islands (a wild and thrilling place we are just starting to learn about), along with two bottles from their more recent Mediterranean project. These wines are HIGHLY LIMITED and the opportunity to purchase ALL SEVEN together is very rare indeed.

Envínate is a quartet of Spanish friends and old schoolmates making world-changing, earth-shatteringly beautiful wines from forgotten, often abandoned vineyards throughout Spain. With the founding concept of celebrating coastal wines and indigenous varieties, Laura Ramos, Alfonso Torrente, José Martínez, and Roberto Santana have advanced the formerly stagnant Spanish wine culture in ways never before seen. 'Their aim is to make profoundly pure and authentic wines that express the terruño of each parcel in a clear and concise manner.'
'Benje' Blanco 2021 $34.99

100% Listan Blanco sourced from several old-vine, un-grafted, high elevation (1200m) parcels. Each parcel is hand-harvested and vinified separately with native yeast and a small portion is left on its skins. The wine is then aged for 8 months in 60% concrete and 40% old French barriques.

The wine opens with aromas of sea spray, crisp orchard fruit, dried apricot and flinty minerals. Fresh green apple, lime and tingling salty minerals accentuate the taut yet gorgeously textured palate. A wine that speaks of its mountainous, high elevation terroir perfectly.
'Táganan' Blanco 2021 $59.99

A field blend of indigenous white grapes from old-vine parcels throughout the Canary Islands. All are untrained vines ranging in age from 60 to 300 years old, without Envínate these vineyards would be on the verge of extinction. Hand harvested and fermented with native yeast. Aged for one year in used French Barrique.

A one-of a kind wine with smoke, white flowers, raw almond and luscious citrus fruit on the nose. The palate has a wonderfully juicy and refreshing quality, coupled with deep saline minerals and crisp acidity. As distinct as it is delicious.
'Benje' Tinto 2021  $34.99

100% Listan Prieto (aka Mission or País) from a handful of un-grafted parcels at 1000m elevation. The grapes are de-stemmed and fermented separately in concrete tank. Once pressed, the wine is aged in neutral French barriques for 8 months. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

The nose is loaded with black currant, cherry, pepper and dried rose petal. The palate's luscious berry fruit is wrapped around a tight coil of smokey, saline minerals and just-right acidity. A shop favorite, this is the first bottle to sell out every year.
'Vidueño' 2021 $42.99

From a tiny 0.15ha parcel of old-vine, untrained Listan Prieto & Listan Blanco on European rootstock. This co-planted parcel is hand-harvested, de-stemmed and co-fermented for 15 days, then transferred to three used 228L French barriques where it ages for eight months before being bottled.

Pale red in the glass, it displays a vibrant and lifted nose of strawberry, red cherry, and pomegranate. The buoyant palate is a mingling of red fruit and crisp minerals, finishing with an elegant floral note. Lip-smacking and thought provoking at once.
'Migan Chingao' 2021  $49.99

This is only the second vintage of this wine! 100% Listan Negro from a single parcel of very old vines at 400m in elevation. The vines are braided and trained on posts as a way to keep them grounded against the strong Atlantic winds. Fermented and aged in concrete tanks with 75% whole bunches.

A singular wine. The nose is full of bright red berry fruit followed by spice, white pepper and a touch of flinty smoke. The vibrant and energetic palate pops with raspberry, cranberry and saline minerality. Deep concentration and complexity coupled with elegance and freshness. This one is a showstopper and my personal favorite.
'Albahra' 2021 $32.99

These vineyards are located in Almansa at the southeastern tip of Castilla-La Mancha. A blend of 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Moravia Agria grown on calcareous soils. There is only around 50ha of Moravia Agria left in Spain. All grapes are hand-harvested and fermented by parcel, then aged in a combination of concrete and 228L used French barriques for eight months.

A richer, deeper fruit profile with plum and blackberry, followed by licorice, spice and earthy notes. The mouth filling palate is full of ripe fruit and dusty tannins but as is typical of Envínate, there's a lively, refreshing acidity to the wine. Absolutely delicious and very quaffable.
'Albahra Chingao' 2021 $36.99

100% Garnacha Tintorera grown on limestone, from the highest vineyard (900m) that contributes to the previous 'Albahra' wine. This is the first single-vineyard bottling from Envinate's vines in Almansa. Hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in concrete tanks where it ages before being bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

Wild aromatics, with notes of black cherry, grilled plum, Mediterranean herbs and peppercorn. The dense palate initially presents as very fruit forward, with blackberry preserves and black plum; tightening up on the finish with crisp, salty minerals and a firm backbone of acidity.
